» Turbine says consoles are superior to PC for MMOs

While speaking at GDC Austin, Turbine's VP of product development Craig Alexander provided insight on why the Lord of the Rings Online developer chose consoles for their upcoming MMO. Describing consoles as an untapped market with fewer potential competitors and up to $2 billion in revenue potentially available, Alexander said consoles are designed to be more accessible and playable than PC, and also they're more social than the PC platform. As Eurogamer reports, he even said consoles were the "superior" platform for MMOs:
Perhaps more surprising is just how committed the company is to bringing its next MMO project to console. While many believe that the PC is the natural home to the genre, Turbine disagrees. Alexander mentioned that the same arguments were made about in-depth sports sims and the FPS genre, but now market leaders like Madden and Call of Duty all have far larger installed bases of players on the consoles.

Alexander said that the evolution of the PC games market is being mirrored on console, and it is only a matter of time before the MMO development scene shifts to PS3 and Xbox 360.

Lending weight to his argument, Alexander reeled off a number of RPG-related facts: namely that Mass Effect, Fable II and Fallout 3 have all sold in excess of three million units, and that, at launch, Oblivion sold to over 50 per cent of the Xbox 360 installed base. In Turbine's view, the appetite for adventuring is there on console, and MMOs are the last piece of the puzzle.

Turbine's certainly taking a nontraditional path with their MMO. The article also states that they're developing for PS3 as the lead platform (rather than the easier to code for Xbox 360) because the PS3 has a number of unique technical challenges that once overcome, should result in better code for all platforms.

» This guy is insane
So since LotRO isn't doing as well as WoW Turbine is setting thier sights on consoles. A mmorpg on console, ya right. Not that it couldn't be successful because consoleboys will buy anything but its definately going to suck. Console + Turbine = fail I tried LotRO and was bored to tears.

I just reread it and is comments are either from insanity or he's a console fanboy. This comment really gets me; "Alexander said consoles are designed to be more accessible and playable than PC, and also they're more social than the PC platform." My kids do ALL of their socializing on thier PCs.

Untapped potential------yes.
Less competition--------yes.

Superior----------------Hell no.

Good enough to be successful---of course.

Depends on your definition of superior. From a business standpoints the two reasons listed make it superior.

I think he makes some interesting points. It is an untapped market. A lot of people are used to paying for extra content and you should probably look at DDO:U if you want an honest idea of how they'll work money in the new MMO. For those who haven't checked it out, the game is free and you pay for small content upgrades, additional classes, etc. Or you can pay $15/month and have access to everything, it really depends on how much you play. For some one or the other is more cost effective, but if you have a good development framework for rolling out new content bi-weekly then you could make good money of $3-5 content packs or new classes, races, etc.

As for consoles being more social, I won't argue with that. I'm 30 and anyone I know that's a gamer who is about 24 and under can't type worth a damn but use voice constantly. Us older MMO players typed a lot... I know many who still won't buy a mic. In the aspect 360/PS3 gamers are more likely to embrace an all-voice comms system in an MMO.

Turbine makes awesome games when it's an IP centered around the MMO and not someone else's.

So if everyone who owns a PS3 bought the game could it even manage to be a "WoW Killer"?

I am wondering how well it will pay off for them since consoles are not what you think of when you think of a pay to play game. Sure Xbox 360 has the gold membership but that isn't really the same.
