» Xbox 360 802.11n WiFi adapter to sell for $100?

Ars Technica's mole has the inside scoop on pricing for Microsoft's upcoming 802.11n Wi-Fi adapter we told you about earlier this month. According to the mole, Microsoft plans to sell it for $100, while the existing b/g adapter will see its price reduced to $79.99. With Nintendo and Sony offering built-in wireless with their consoles that's still too expensive in my opinion, but apparently MSFT thinks otherwise.

Besides the upcoming wireless adapter, the mole says Microsoft's holiday bundle for the Elite this year will include copies of Pure and Lego Batman. Expect the holiday bundle consoles to hit retailers around mid-October.

I like the fact that WiFi isn't included. It gave consumers more flexibility in the long run. Just imagine if they had included wifi: You'd be paying extra for the console probably, and you'd either have to buy a new console, or purchase an extra part anyway, just to get Wireless N right now.

Leaving the wifi out of the console gave us more flexibility in the long run.

Not really it's an access point that is wireless N. Those are still pretty expensive with a retail of at least $80.

Try $50. Stop riding Microsoft's jock already.

You find a Wireless N dual band access point for under $80 that isn't like used or an open box product and I will delete my post. Right now you really can't do it so expecting a Microsoft part to be a bit higher is not that bad.

Or you can just buy an access point for 1/2 the price.

I don't see why it's so critical that MS include free wifi JUST to save you adding a single ethernet cable to the wires behind your entertainment console.

It WOULD be cool if one of the higher-end SKUs had it integrated, though...

XBox360 Ultimate, including BluRay, 2 wireless controllers, wifi, 250GB HD. I'd go for that!

I don't think most people care about the cable behind the TV, I think most care about getting Cat 5e to behind the TV. If your house was pre-wired then of course you'd go hardwired, far more reliable anyway. However most residential is a huge pain to properly run cabling.

While you are at it you could say epic fail Sony for not adding wireless N to the PS3 Slim. I mean it would cost Sony like nothing to have done that.

I'm just glad Microsoft did the smart thing and waited for N to become a standard. So many people jumped on the N bandwagon far too soon and it certainly wasn't ready. The early routers have terrible range and speeds don't get anywhere near what they claimed.

I deployed the new Sonicwall SonicPoint N for the library, we can get signal all the way across the parking lot and across a major street in the Sonic parking lot. Pretty impressive. Of course, those just came out because they also waited for the spec to become finalized. I'm waiting on the new Linksys APs to come out in the next few weeks before I upgrade at home.

I liked the post since people are bashing Microsoft for having a $100 wireless N part you would pay about the same for wireless N on the PS3 and can not do it on the Wii because it lacks a ethernet port. With wireless N being 3 being 3 times faster and having a longer range I think I would pay for it rather than stick with G if I was to watch movies on the console.
