GSC Gameworld has released new STALKER: Call of Pripyat screenshots that highlight the game's DirectX 11 graphics. The first two screenshots highlight GSC's use of tessellation to add more detail to the DX11 character. The last 8 shots focus on the game's DX11 contact hardened shadows, which are compared to DX10.1 shadows.

In the DX11 contact hardened shadows screenshots (images 04, 06, 08, 10), you can see the sharper shadow edges where they contact the object that's casting the shadow. The shadow edge gets blurrier further away from the object.

I like those tree's and soft shadows, but I doubt this couldn't be done on dx9. I think developers should be spending more time on physx, customization, enemy variety, optimizing graphics and working on smoother online play. DX11 will no doubt be performance reducing fluff. It seems graphics capabilities started leveling out years ago with the intro of the UE3 engine and the reality is, dx9 is still a very capable in the right hands. I think Nvidia is smart if the new 300 cards are truly GPGPU's like I've been reading. Like others said, DX11 is purely marketing hype.

definetly not enough variety.. enemies/levels/gameplay.

Seems every FPS these days is "super-hyper-acurate" with hordes of clone enemies.

Last "original" gameplay I recall is "Prey" with the moonwalking on mini-world.

These effects can often be done manually under DX9, same with most DX10 effects, but they are much easier and come at a far smaller performance cost under DX10/11. Additionally the tesselation is something you can't get on previous versions, which is why objects that are round actually look round.

DX11 right now is a evolutionary step not revolutionary. Give it time. Better visuals are always welcome. 2010 will be the best year yet for PC gaming!

I disagree about DX9 not looking better.

True, you could play Far Cry on Radeon 8500, and it looked almost the same (wow I'm old).
But, if you look at demos like 3DMARK05 (ofcourse) and rthdrlb... its thanks to DX9 you get such light caustics and shadow effects.

Marketing problem from DX9-DX10-DX11, is that effects are getting more subtle. Remember that mermaid nVidia demo how it had various shaders for skin so some light would show through, and subsurface scattering etc. Thats a LOT of calculations for something NOBODY would ever notice running around shooting in an FPS.

And your not going to, not yet. Chances are most of the first games featuring DX11 were quickly patched to do so to be showcase titles. Did DX9 look better than DX8 at first..no. We go through this every cycle with DX10 being the acception, its hard to argue that DX10 did much of anything.

Thank you, Mr. Obvious. I'm not arguing any of that. I'm just stating that there isn't a difference between the shots so the whole "STALKER Call of Pripyat is a DX11 title" is a load of crap. But hold on, there was an appreciable difference between DX8 and DX9. Especially when it came to lighting. There was an even greater difference between DX7 and DX8 launch titles.

The charcoal filter on the gas mask is round in one image and not so round in the other. I'm guessing DX11 is the one with the round filter.
