| | (Post a comment) » Is AMD's Bulldozer CPU 128-bit?I really shouldn't post this, but news has been slow lately, so here goes. With the recent revelation that Microsoft plans to integrate 128-bit support into Windows 8, Bright Side of News postulates that AMD's next-generation Bulldozer core could be 128-bit. In fact, it could possibly be the world's first 128-bit CPU.
As BSN notes, Microsoft wouldn't develop a 128-bit OS without the hardware to back it up, and this would certainly explain the delays Bulldozer has encountered over the years. What isn't known is when Intel plans to offer their first 128-bit CPU. We know for sure that their next-generation Sandy Bridge CPU due this time next year won't support it, but the generation after that, codenamed Haswell, just might.
According to the latest AMD roadmaps, Bulldozer isn't expected until 2011. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

| | there are no true 128bit cpu's out there. The ps2/3 is not a true 128bit cpu. I searched a bit trying to find out about previous 128bit cpu's, couldn't find any. Wiki say's there are none. It seems that if this is a true 128bit cpu, it will be the first of it's kind. » Login to reply to this |

Erm...I could be wrong, but wasnt the PS2 EE a 128-bit MIPS core at heart?
I've heard conflicting reports that the DCs SH4 was/was not 128-bit, but that would be another example.» Login to reply to this larsig (780) Oct 13, 2009 - 11:05 pm
| Those are multi-data instructions, not true 128 bit instructions. If you included those as true 128 bit, then you might as well include almost all (If not all, absolutes tend to bite you in the ass) mainstream cpu's the past decade. The multi-data instuctions basically allow you to do operations on multiple values at once.
EE was a 32 bit MIPS cpu with a custom ISA that included 128 bit SIMD instructions. There is a distinction.
In short, yes, this would probably be the first true 128 bit cpu for consumers if not ever.» Login to reply to this |
