Right now ATI can't produce enough 5800 series cards to keep up with demand, and thanks to the shortage of competing 55-nm GPUs like the GTX 285, there's no real competition out there either. There's just 1 GeForce GTX 285 card available on Newegg right now, the ASUS GTX 285 Matrix, which is priced at over $350. The GeForce GTX 275 is completely sold out.
BSN claims the new MSRP for the Radeon 5850 is $299, while the 5870 will see its price increased to $399. That's an increase of $40 and $20 respectively over ATI's launch pricing.
Supposedly the new pricing will take effect with the next generation of cards, which will go beyond the reference design with features like custom cooling and OC'ing. One of the first of these cards will be the Sapphire 5870 Vapor-X, which we showed you yesterday.
