» ATI Radeon 5970 Performance Preview

After a 10-month hiatus, ATI's once again got the world's fastest graphics card. The Radeon 5970 fuses two RV870 chips onto one board for max performance, and is built for OC'ing. See how this board fares in the latest games including Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and DX11 titles like STALKER: Call of Pripyat in this article!

in the old days, upgrading a Celeron 450 to Athlon800 doubled your performance. Your shiny new GeForce2 finally fixed the UT + TNT stuttering lag fest.

Nowadays, what's the point? Except for ultra quality Crysis (which I doubt you buy new video card to replay 50x), all games are fine on 4870x2 and GTX295. And simply turning down the AA you save $$$ with a super cheap HD5770.

Besides, its not like "super hot non-contraversial replayable titles" like MW2 have got you stumbling crazy into Best Buy to get your Quad + Dual-GPU fix.

I hate when in the test setup they always use a intel extreme outlandishly priced cpu that maybe .2% of people out there actually own. They need to use a real world CPU that most folks have. I7 920 or phenom II at 3ghz or better. Its fun to see what the best can do but show real mainstream results as well.

I second that. There seems to be a lack of cpu scaling in every article I read. I'd really like to see how a 720, 955, e8400, q9550, 920 scales since they are probably the most common with us everyday gamers.

» e8400, q9550...
the results would be slower, and slower. And compressed, with less difference between competitors.

At some point, (assuming no driver bugs/cheats) something like an Athlon 3000+ would be so CPU limited it would be like 10-20 fps in all games at all resolutions regardless of which card you used.

Would be kinda bland and boring..

I think the idea is to ensure there's no cpu bottleneck so the cards can really show what they're capable of, which I agree with. That said, I also agree with Soldier36 (what did I just say?!) that it would be nice to see the cards tested in a midrange configuration too.

Keep in mind that I'm running the Extreme at 3.33GHz w/o Turbo mode. I always disable Turbo to ensure consistency among all the different cards.

So it's actually not running any faster than a Lynnfield CPU w/Turbo.

Great article, but:

"As you can imagine, it’s a bit embarrassing when your competitor’s previous generation product is still considered to be the 3D performance champ."

I dont see how getting beat by a last-gen dual GPU card is embarrassing. Same thing happened to nvidia when their GTX 280 first came out....it was beaten many times by the 9800GX2. Now, if the GTX285 was beating the 5870 consistantly, then, yeah, it would be embarassing.

I dunno, I'd consider the 9800 GX2 outrunning the GTX 280 to be a little embarrassing too. Perhaps that's just me though?
