» Microsoft: 'No need to launch a new console'

Unlike the original Xbox, Microsoft's in no rush to replace the Xbox 360. Company executives have stated repeatedly that the console's life cycle isn't half over yet, and reiterated those comments again at CES last week.

Speaking with the UK Guardian, Microsoft's David Hufford said:

"I think it's important to say that the Xbox 360 is the console of the long future for us. There is no need to launch a new console, because we're able to give this console new life either with software upgrades or hardware upgrades like Project Natal.

The Xbox 360 was designed for a long life, and I don't even know if we're at the midpoint yet,"

Considering where the economy is right now, Microsoft and Sony obviously aren't eager to dump the hundreds of millions needed to develop newer consoles. Instead they're integrating incremental hardware upgrades. In the case of Sony, the PS3 will get its own motion device, as well as 3D this year, while Natal will ship for Xbox 360 by the end of the year. (Spotted on Gamasutra)

Say what you want about it. The fact of the matter is, it's making them a lot of money right now, and there's no reason to replace it yet. Are they working on the next gen? Sure, but there's no reason to let the cat out of the bag yet and give people a reason to wait for it instead of getting a 360.

I'll be looking at buying my first 360 this holiday season, as long as a bundled Natal doesn't push the prince up too high...

that said, I would be much happier waiting another year if MS' next gen console were to come out in fall 2011. The 360 is just so 2005...

has it already been 5 years already ?

Perhaps xbox 720 isnt too far away after all ...

I'm betting they test drive Natal for a year on the 360 and then come out with an improved version with the launch of the xbox 720 at that time. I can't say I see that much of a point graphically however. I just don't see the generational leap in graphic power the other consoles had happening anytime soon.

to those saying Wii HD would compete with the other consoles, I personally hate the motion controls and would steer clear regardless of graphics, frankly i'm begging that Natal fails so it doesn't get forced into the games I want to play

Motion controls are optional. Sure a lot of devs try to force them in ways that aren't needed, but they make a classic controller with for the Wii as well. Many traditional games, especially ports like CoD, would likely use the classic controller. I'm fine with that.

I don't hate motion controls, I hate when developers think motion controls is nothing more than using a waggle to emulate a button press. That sucks.

Everyone knew this. Microsoft needs to profit of the 360. Its going to be a while before it does that and makes enough to pay for the R&D of the next xbox. I mean did you think microsoft would dip in there pockets a third time to pay for that? I dont think so.

Uh online sales through Xbox Live last year was over a billion dollars. I think they are making a profit just off the Xbox live aspect of the console since I would be suprised I'd they spent over a billion on the 360.

Number uses Live account fees as well as downloads.

Im not denying that the 360 is making a profit now, but what about the 3 years before that when it wasnt? What about the 1billion dollar RROD fixing bill? What about the R&D costs of the 360? Marketing costs? Billions of dollars needed simply to launch a console.

My point is sure its making a profit now, however its more like paying of the debt its racked up in the years it wasnt making money not to mention its R&D and Marketing before it was even released. After it pays that off it has to earn enough to pay for the next console, and im not even going to estimate how many billions of dollars thats going to take.

My assumption seems correct, both sony and microsoft will not be able to release a successor console around the time nintendo release the successor of the Wii, which should be 2011-2012 (oh no its the end of the world!!) That is unless it again comes out of there own pocket.

Im far from a hardcore Wii gamer lol. I am a PC gamer through and Through, but from time to time i dont mind a change, so the Wii offers that to me.
