Halo is awesome and multiplayer gets even better. There is so much
strategy involved. Not only do you have to lead but well thrown
grenades are key. Some of the noobs have still not figured out the
power of the pistol but with every new death they get closer and
closer to discovering the secret.
There are also secret places you can get into using the warthog or
shee. Halo online is probably the funnest multiplayer game I have
ever played.

1.03 Fixes:
•Plasma grenades can no longer teleport on vehicles
•Players standing on rock no longer experience “warping”
•Teleporters no longer cause occasional camera out of sync
•Cinematic speech bug with Audigy cards fixed
•Game not starting with unsupported refresh rates fixed
•“Telefraged” message is now displayed when a player is telefraged
•Flashlight toggle bug in MP games fixed
•Interrupting reload animation bug fixed
Thank god they finally fixed that audio bug. Like the cynics say:
maybe this is the patch that makes the game good.

As far as the weapons being 'blah', they're actually very strategic.
Halo has precision hit-detection, in the sense that headshots do
more damage than body shots. A way to test this out is by grabbing
the pistol, and taking 3 body shots, and then taking 3 headshots.
Three body shots will leave them with approximately 2-3 health, no
armor. 3 headshots will kill your opponent (Actually, 1 headshot + 2
body shots will kill your opponent).
One sniper shot to the head will kill your opponent, but it can take
up to 3 body shots to give the same effect.
The assault rifle is a very good weapon at close range, but starts
to lose its effect at greater distances (Most noobs just haven't
figured this out yet, as I've seen them firing at me from super-long
distances, before i drop them with my pistol). The assault rifle can
tear away an entire overshield at close range, which leaves your
enemy rendered defenseless for a headshot with a pistol, which would
kill them.
The shotgun is amazing. It's a one-shot kill, at pointblank range.
Most of the alien weapons (Needler, Plasma Pistol/Rifle, Plasma
Grenades) are more useful than most people realize. People who camp
the overshield (Guilty.) can really take some serious hits against
people who have some skill with any of these weapons. Plasma-type
weapons deplete the overshield faster than standard military-grade
weapons. The needler, quite possibly the most over-looked weapon in
the game, can kill your opponent with one clip of needles, even if
they have the overshield (as it's based on the plasma-tech of the
other alien weapons). May sound incredibly cheap but it isn't, as
its very difficult to

Out of everything I've heard mentioned, I can honestly agree that
Halo has very shady netcode. I don't know if it was due to lack of
development time, or if its simply a reworked-port of the Xbox's lan
code (Which could explain some situations I've been in a few times
online). You have to lead your shots in Halo PC. Period. I recall
Counter-Strike having these issues when it was first released.
Netcode problems can be fixed in future patches.
Performance issues are definitely there. But they really only stem
out in Campaign mode (I haven't touched Campaign mode once since
purchasing the game. That's just not where the fun is). During a
frantic multiplayer session (at least 8 players), you can expect to
pull at least 50-60fps on a relatively fast DX8 card (Geforce 4 Ti
or higher), and never dip below 60 on a faster DX9 card (9700 Pro or
higher). Given the fact that the game pushes heavy Pixel Shaders
(The only other games on the market that can claim to do the same
are Splinter Cell, and Tomb Raider: AoD). Disabling all the fancy
pixel shader effects gives you around 100+fps at all times.
The visuals are amazing in Halo. Something that's puzzled me is how
people are saying the visuals seem 'dated' compared to other PC
titles. Okay, compared to 'what' exactly? UT2003? Quake 3? BF1942?
The only area where UT2K3 claims better visuals, are in its higher
polygon count. But in texture detail, and pixel shaders (Which UT2K3
doesn't even support), Halo outdoes it in spades.

I totally agree with you. I bought the game last week and by the
time i reached the fourth level which I accomplished the same day
(yes I'm a game freak), I was totally bored.
As for the graphics, there is nothing exceptional about them. There
is nothing that is eye catching nor anything that would have you
ranting on and on about them like I was when I first played GTA 3.
How this game ranked over GTA 3 is a mystery to me.
I rate Halo - Combat Evolved a 6/10.

This review in my opinion is innaccurate in a few ways:
First off, saying that the graphics are dated is a completely
ridiculous statement. I'll agree that on my Geforce 4 mx card it
really doesn't look spectacular, but on my friend ATI 9800 it's
nothing short of amazing. This game was designed around the directx
9 platform and with the specular and shadow effecting it is flawless
to say the least.
Secondly, third picture saying "time for a banshee" or
something similar is also labeled incorrect. That is a ghost. The
banshee is the plane. How can you do a review without even know what
the vehicles are?
