Well, at first the game is fun. Ambiance is good, music at fisrt
feels great. Until you run into sound problems. These bugs with
sound do not seem do have a cure, I've tried everything I could
think of. The game is good, even though it becomes a kind of
routine after a while. But sound issues should have been correctly
adressed before releasing this game.

It's cool how much the difficulty can vary, the challenge level has
a terrific dynamic range, depending on difficulty setting, what
level your warlord is, the map, what race against whom, and so
forth. I'm a complete newbie to the Warlords series so I don't know
what I'm missing, I guess. But what is here is really good, and good
enough to keep me playing game after game after game.

Well, nice to see the series getting back to its ROOTS! I LOVED the
orrigional, warlords 2 was right up there as well. Warlords 3...
lost it's way. Now, Warlords is back to the orrigional
"economy" theme. Fellow veterans of the first 2 should be
right in there for this installment. I plan on purchasing it. This
game brings back the old school goodness of the first one,
difficulty and all ^_^

Nice review, and overall if pretty much nails the problem. It's not
a BAD game, really, but those who have played the earlier games in
series will be expecting a lot more than what is delivered. In the
end, it's just yet another TBS (Turn-Based Strategy) series that
lost touch with the genre and technology. (No, great technology
doesn't make a great game, but outdated technology can make a
mediocre game much less.)
Let's see... Heroes of Might and Magic III was amazing, addictive,
and the scenarios were a lot of fun. (The Shadow of Death
expansion, in particular, had a great story! That was the pinnacle
of the HOMM world, I think.) HOMMIV had some improved graphics, but
the gameplay was dumbed down, the AI really sucked, the maps were
basically designed so that the poor AI could compete, and the story
took the worst of the previous titles and ran with it. It was just
no longer very fun.
Masters of Orion 2 was considered one of the best 4X strategy games
ever, had entertaining races, great gameplay, and good graphics and
sound (for its day). MOO3 had graphics that could hardly even keep
up with its predecessor, same for the sound, the story... well, I
never got to the story because in general the gameplay was just so
STALE! It felt like playing Masters of Excel more than a game.
And now, Warlords IV joins these two once-great series with a
decidedly mediocre release. The graphics and sound haven't changed
much since Warlords III, which I suppose I could live with, if it
weren't for the complete dumbing down of the whole system. It's no
wonder the AI is so amazingly cut-throat: the complexities of the
previous titles have disapp

As a newbie to the Warlords series, I have found this game to be
immersive in the single-player mode and a lot of fun to play. There
is a lot to be said for fun, so I play W4HE a lot! Just me
personally, this game has seized me in a vice-like grip and I have
not had so much enjoyment from any game since I first discovered
StarCraft. Everyone else's mileage may vary, and obviously does,
though I think this is the best overall review of the game I have
read so far.
There are subtleties in the game that you have to play a long time
to find. Reading the manual in detail and flogging the official web
site for helpful hints and tips is also useful. You do have
diplomacy options, by the way, but they are set at the beginning of
a skirmish or a random game, there are no in-game diplomacy options
which is probably what was meant in the review where it is said
there are none.
The other inaccuracy in the review is where it states that you
cannot build certain units. Untrue. You can build anything except
heroes from other races if you upgrade the cities far enough. But if
the other race is far enough away from you on the wheel, the build
time may be too long for the high level units to be more than
amusing curiosities.
I do agree with the reviewer about the focus on the frequency and
intensity of combat. A better name might indeed have been
BlitzLords! The demo, by the way, is almost a game in itself and
very well done.

What a bummer. There's no online FPS games coming out for the
holiday season. It's either feast or famine.
Next year we get UT2K4, HL2, D3, TV, and who knows, maybe Q4 if they
wanna rush it for Christmas 2004. Plus I'm sure there will be a
bunch of sequels for the 5 WWII games and all their variations.
But right now it's nothing.
Oh well, back to T2 for me.

After reading this review, I am curious about the 3rd part, but I
can always just go play Heroes 3, or Age of Wonders again, and be
assured of a great game.
Much of the game in Warlords looks very derivative of HOMM and AoW
anyway; surprised it got a 73%.
