 Tiger Woods Out...Until August!

| | (Post a comment) » NWN Hordes of the Underdark ReviewNeverwinter Nights was a great, revolutionary game with a rather bland singleplayer experience. Hordes of the Underdark is here to rectify all that, but does it succeed? And how can it compare with the latest crop of RPGs? Is Neverwinter too tired, or is there something to be said about going to level 40? | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

In the past, I have written off Firing Squad as a fairly mindless
website dedicated only to those that play Quake 3 (or whathaveyou)
20 hours a day.
I was lead here indirectly while searching for a Linux driver for my
network card and came across the article on this website about the
performance penalty for using more memory in a system than its
memory controller can safely handle at full speed. I thought it was
a very well written article--with enough technical information to be
informative to hardware geeks, but enough skill in writing that the
information was presented in such a way that those less educated on
hardware would be able to still extract the important points of the
article.
I was surprised to find 2/3 of the way through the article that it
was hosted on Firing Squad. Understand please that there are so many
truly bad review websites out there, some very famous and often
trusted *coughtomshardwarecough*, that I probably brush over sites
based on first impressions too often.
Then I read the AMD interview. A good interview.
THEN I read this article.
Reading this review of the new NWN expansion was like a breathe of
fresh air. Completely free of the
"such-a-huge-release-that-it-must-be-good" syndrome
present in the NWN release (esp on Gamespot), and on other major
mediocre releases like Black & White.
The original NWN campaign really was mediocre. This article seemed
to agree with my findings on the failings of NwN, while pointing out
its real strengths. It made very clear references to comparable
titles--ones that it pales in comparison to, and ones that it does
not, all in a way that made it easy to determine

LOL you must be joking, comparing the gameplay of D2 to something as
massive as NWN. D2 is RPG-light while NWN is a computer adaptation
of a PNP game.

I won't be able to play until Santa's little helper (read, the wife)
gives me Hordes at xmas. I have spoken to many of my colleagues who
have played it though and they all say the same thing. It rocks! SoU
was an OK expansion that added a couple cool things but didn't add
anything groundbreaking. Hordes does. Skyboxes and better camera
controlc ome to mind for starters.
I don't understand the performance issues some have mentioned
though. I have every detail set to it's maximum and I only have a
Athlon 1800+ and a Radeon 9500Pro (normally 512 MB RAM, currently
256MB) and the game screams. I only get sluggish when playing online
during intense battles, which is usually due to Internet lag.
To truly enjoy all that NWN has to offer, you need to explore the
community that as grown around it. Find a good PW/guild at
nwn.bioware.com or for some good "old-school" DM-run
adventure; sign up at www.neverwinterconnections.com and sign up for
a game there. You won't be dissappointed!

anyone else having problems with it crashing? I've been searching
and searching and can find no known compatability problems. amd
athalon xp 2000, viakt400, radeon9600pro, 512mb corsair xms, 120gb
WD special edition, antec truepower 380, win xp pro sp1, directx
9.0b. Runs everything else fine, need for speed underground, grand
theft auto vice city, midnight club 2, tron 2.0, battlefield 1942,
rise of nations, warcraft 3. Did all the standard fixes, defrag,
shut down all programs, uninstall/reinstall. Does anyone know if it
has any of that copy protection stuff that will pull a turbo tax
trashing of your system?

Regardless of the OC, the power of NWN is the toolset and the DM
client. HoTU simply gives the builders and DMs more toys :)

I'm so glad to read about the performance problems suffered by the
reviewer. My 2Ghz Dell is a pansy, but I figured I should at least
be able to play an RPG without such stuttering. I was thinking my
gaming days are over til I get an upgrade, but if the
no-doubt-madly-potent rig FS uses had slowdowns as well, I know it's
not just me.
