Well, our resident gaming blabbermouth... er... reviewer, Jakub, busted out his Monopoly money, picked up a copy and now he's all cool like the rest of us because he's bashing the game. I picked up Deus Ex: IW for under $10, and Doom 3, for $54.99, at
the same time.
So far, I find Deus Ex: IW more interesting and involving than Doom
3. Sure, it's not as good as the first Deus EX (Not sure about the
"hasn't aged well" bit... I replayed Deus Ex a few weeks
ago, and had more fun with it than I did the first time around
several years ago.)
Losing the skill system sucks, but it's still a lot of fun. The
interface isn't that bad (given I'm playing with 1.2 patch.), as
long as you adjust the opacity to get rid of most of that god-awful
HUD.

Although I wouldn't call the first DX completely original, as most
of the groundwork was laid in the legendary System Shock 1 & 2,
it was indeed a better game BECAUSE of the immersion factor
involved. The skill system was great because you got a sense of
accomplishment building your own custom character from practically
nothing. In DX:IW, you start out quite capable and the biomods are
just sort of neat little tweaks.
Although I can't honestly add more than what's been written, I would
like to take a moment and say that unlike every other fanboy, I'm
NOT anticipating System Shock 3 and wouldn't even pay attention if
anyone but Mr. Spector was developing it. I think DX:IW is a perfect
example of why I feel this way. As it was, SS2 was a great game
until the last 1/4th, in which it became extremely linear and forced
in its plot progression and gameplay, and Looking Glass has stated
repeatedly that this was the result of pressure from Origin to
finish the project. SS2 was an exclusive PC title (although rumors
about of a scrapped Dreamcast conversion attempt), so just imagine
what sort of restrictions must have been placed on ISA by Eidos
while developing DW:IX for console and PC simultaneously. I'd rather
remain forever nostalgiac of the great times I had playing the games
than see a debased and comparatively mediocre sequel tarnish those
memories.

The overwhelming problem with DX:IW is that is so underwhelming!
Short levels, crippled character development are just some of the
bad features. Of course DX was devoid of AI and sometimes was far
too sparse in level population to be healthy, but you sure as hell
could customise your character beyond all belief and the
environmental immersion was first class.
DX 1 was certainly not without it's flaws, DX:IW though, seemed to
keep those flaws then chuck out the good gameplay as well. The
story, though interesting, in DX:IW was so derivitive as to be
frustrating and boring, every character you met was a mission goal
or plot device - you can't miss anything at all, no matter how hard
you try. For all the talk of multiple path soloutions there isn't
actually much choice at all. If the foresight was there to throw in
buildings, characters etc.. that weren't involved with the plot
would of made the game a lot more immersive and would of saved it
from mediocrity.
Personally i would knock 20% off of that score. But hey i'm just an
anon internet poster

I ran Deus Ex on at PII 266Mhz,64 MB RAM and a Voodoo 2 16MB in
1024x768 with no lag what so ever. No overclocking, no special
tweaking.
But had no major problems with lag with DE:IW on my old PIII 1Ghz,
500 MB RAM, GeForce Ti4800 128 MB. But an issue is the graphics
drives for the Nvidia cards. The newer versions doesn't run good
with the "old" cards. I use an older version, can't
remember witch now, writting this on another PC. But think is like
43 or 45 ...
And of course I have tweaked my XP for gaming or else I would have a
CPU cycle left for playing (thnx M$).

Lol!
Your review of Jacub's review was ALOT better the the one Jacub did
of the DX:IW!
I give you a 11 out of 9!
Jacub's review I give a -10! It can't be the same two games I've
played. The original Deus Ex was a CLASSIC game, mayby the best game
ever. Invisible War is a mainstream game that noone will remember in
3 mounths!

Exactly my thoughts too ...
This game shouldn't been released AT ALL on the pc scene!
I won't touch this game with at 10 feet pole!
I hope they won't screw up HL2 now, else I won't buy one more PC
game before testing it in some way!
And one can't trust the reviewers eighter. Seen alot of high ratings
on this crappy pile of ...
But I guess, this part of the gaming industry gets there financing
from the same source as the gamemakers. As say say, one shouldn't
bite the hand that feeds you.
The only good thing about this is that one finds out wich reviewers
one can trust in the future!

Yeah I didn't bother to register - I'm lazy, so shot me! :p

Is there anyway to finish the game without killing anyone?
Sure, so scientists are going to die, but can it be done?

This game flat-out sucks. I can't understand why it's getting so
many >80% reviews, but then again I never understood why Ultima
IX got so many >80% reviews when it debuted, either.
The reviewer at Gameshark pegged this turkey exactly: the maps have
been made so tiny (as they "embraced the limitations of the
Xbox") that every single f'n 'choice' boils down to: crawl
through vent, sneak by person or frag person. The lack of a skill
system, the abundance of biomods (and utterly $##!!@%& either-or
positioning in some cases) and the unified ammo make DXIW little
more than a $50 interactive movie. Remember Don Bluth's
"Dragon's Lair"? Every time I play, I do.
DXIW gets boring real fast. I've played through Deus Ex four times
since buying it; I'm nearing the end of DXIW and considering just
shelving it. Increasingly I am finding myself in a Call of Duty
game when I had intended to sit down and play DXIW.
I bought DXIW in spite of already hearing the complaints, based on
trust of the name alone. A mistake I won't make again.
I'd recommend that anyone dying to know the continuation of the Deus
Ex plot just buy the game when it's in the bargain bin, and use
cheats to see all the cutscenes. The gameplay itself isn't fun or
interesting enough to recommend.
