This DX9 graphics card is aimed squarely at the mainstream market and offers all the right features to compete with the latest parts from ATI and NVIDIA. In this article, we take a prototype DeltaChrome S8 board for a spin through a few of our regular benchmarks. Poor drivers = me not interested. For the last year ATI has only
started to get decent drivers and I don't think I want to go through
that again ever.
How about more games like Homeworld2 (OpenGL) and flightsim2004
(D3D)?

Detonator 52.xx was used with the Ti4200, those are up to 30% slower
than Ref 44.03 drivers which is the last decent release for the
GF4Ti. Ti4200 would have kicked butt with the right drivers.

You're totally right: Driver support is going to be a major issue!
And as far as drivers go, this article did a wonderful job of
showing just how bad of an influence benchmarks can be. Let's
see... DeltaChrome runs fine in 3DMark and Halo and Unreal
Tournament. All of those are common benchmarks. What about the
rest of the games....
Quake3? OpenGL in general? The old S3 rears its ugly head, and it
looks pretty clear that they still haven't learned how to do a good
OpenGL driver. The Direct3D isn't that great either. Splinter Cell
and Nascar 2003 are both relatively common D3D games, so support
should be good. If these games run this poorly, I don't expect a
lot of the lesser known games to run well at all.
I know it's not the fault of reviewers - they have a job to do,
after all - but I will be truly shocked if S3 gets the performance
of this chip up in *ALL* areas. My guess is that games that get
benchmarked regularly will run (eventually...), but everything else
is a crap shoot. Unless you're desparate, stick with ATI and Nvidia
- they've been around long enough that they work properly on 95% or
more of the titles. S3 will be lucky to get 80%.

"Finally some information with actual silicone."
Yes, that's right: They will be using the DeltaChrome chips to power
all the latest and greatest breast enhancements!!! Can't wait for
my wife to get a pair so I can overclock them.... :)
In the future, you might want to use the word "silicon"
instead.

Yes this is all banking on if they can get there drivers going.
Based on S3's past driver history.....I would not expect much of
anything
For those that may have forgotten they had the worst drivers(Savage4
and the ill fated Savage2000). ATi wasn't even on the same level
compared to S3 for bad drivers. They improved and ended up not being
half but...........but not till the cards where basicly dead :\

This card might do well with the HTPC market, depending on how well
supported HDTV is. The ATI HD out is nothing to brag about, it
works, but to get it going properly, you really need to do custom
tweaking with Powerstrip. since this is on chip, I hope the driver
support for HD is better.

Finally some information with actual silicone. I was beginning to
wonder if this was going to be a vaporware item. Hopefully they can
get the drivers sorted out. Then if they (via)can replace their
current IGP with one using this they may have something.

This product announcement from S3Graphics is very good for the
consumer. At least now there will be one more very acceptable
mainstream graphics card at the $150 price point. I like upgrading
my graphics card every 18 months or so and I'd like to give this one
a shot but... they need to improve OpenGL performance very very
quickly!

The AIW cards offer video encoding via an external Rage Theater or
Theater 200 chip, depending on the AIW card you get.

I tried OC'ing the card from its default level of 300MHz to Nitro
speeds (315/315) but it didn't work. Remember though, this card is
circa 8/03.
#6: No, 3DMark 03 hasn't been retired, it will be used alongside
with ShaderMark 2.0. In this case I decided to go with 3DMark rather
than ShaderMark, but neither is going anywhere. Synthetic benches
definitely have a future here. You just won't see us using them in
the 3rd or 4th GFFX review we post for a given architecture.
