But how does it stack up to the FX, and is the added performance worth the extra money? See how this new chip performs inside! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

You must have seen either the wrong product or, since you provided a
link, a wrong price. It is now listed as $679. So not that much of
a change.

On a separate note, I have to question some of the benchmark results
obtained. Let's see... we've got a CPU clocked at 2.2 GHz instead
of 2.0 GHz. That's a 10% performance boost. All things being
equal, you should never see more than about a 10% boost in any
application, and in most you will see less than that. The only
applications which will experience close to the 10% increase in
speed are the ones that are completely CPU-limited. Since most
applications are bottlenecked by memory bandwidth, memory latency,
hard drives, graphics cards, etc., 3 to 9% is a pretty good estimate
for real world gains.
In the benchmarks, there are several instances where the 3400+ beats
the 3200+ by more than 10%. IL2 Sturmovik: Forgotten Battles had a
15.3% increase; and Sysmark 2004, 2D creation had a 15.5% increase;
Business Winstone 2004 had an 11.9% increase; Content Creation 2004
had a 14.9% increase. It seem to me that these benchmarks, at
least, are susceptible to large variations in between runs. I can
accept this, but rather than championing this fact at the end of the
review ("The difference in benchmark results is as high as 15
percent..."), you should probably be evaluating the numbers a
little closer and calling the benchmarks into question.
How about this modified conclusion: “The Athlon 64 3400+ is an
exciting follow-up to a successful launch of the AMD64 initiative,
which saw the company jump ahead of Intel’s performance numbers
after a year of trailing. Although it doesn’t offer any new
features, it does run 200MHz faster than its predecessor, which
means a lot on a processor that isn’t readily overclockable. The
difference

Was there a benchmark run that tests the 3400+'s 64bit power? Are
these chips good with 64bit apps? If you overclocked a Barton to
3400+ would the 32bit performance be close to the Athlon 64
3200/3400's 32bit performance? On pricewatch there is a Athlon XP
3200+ 400mhz cpu that should've been here with some overclocked
results if possible so there can be a better gauge of value.

Does anybody know how hot the Athlon 64 runs in compaison to the
Athlon XP line? Are they significanly hotter, hence the need for
something like Cool 'n' Quiet?

It's usually a good idea to consult dictionary.com before slinging
these sorts of insults...
In this case, the use of the word palpable implies tangibility.
Because the 3200+ is $300 cheaper than the Athlon 64 FX-51, it is
more feasible, or, in reach of, folks on a budget. Hope I made it
easier to understand =)
