| | (Post a comment) » nForce2 Ultra 400 Shootout: ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe vs DFI LANPARTY NFII UltraSince its inception, ASUS' A7N8X Deluxe has been highly regarded by journalists and end users due to its excellent combination of performance, features, and price, not to mention that solid ASUS name. To ring in 2004 ASUS decided to build on this foundation and add a little more flavor with the A7N8X-E Deluxe. In comparison, DFI has been aiming to steal away gamers and enthusiasts from traditional players like ASUS and ABIT, offering features that go beyond both companies’ offerings in many cases. DFI has improved their nForce2 Ultra 400 board to take on the most feature-rich nForce2 motherboards. This product is the LANPARTY NFII Ultra B.
In today's article we pitch both of these products head-to-head. Both boards offer the standard nForce2 Ultra 400 with MCP-T features like dual-channel DDR400 and Dolby Digital audio, but add to that equation with extras like Gigabit Ethernet and Serial ATA. If you're shopping for a new motherboard to go with your brand new Athlon XP processor this is one article you won't want to miss!

I am planning to upgrade using a7n8x-delx. I have narrowed down my
choice to the following three mobos. Can you help me with your
comments so that I can make a decision. a7n8x-delux
a7n8xe-delux
a7n8x- vm/400
Q.1: I looked the specifications of a7n8x-dlx and a7n8xe-dlx and
found some differences, of course. As you have mentioned the main
difference is with regard to wi-fi facility and something to do with
lan gigabit. I am not concerned much about these. I also noticed
some other differences. These are as follows
a) 8x-delux has HP amplifer. does 8xe also has this feature? Are
the audio processing units of the two boards the same or different?
What does HP amplifier do ? Is the e board inferior in this
respect or are they both same ?
b) 8x-dlx has no SPDIF in it seems in the internal connections.
8xe-delux has both in and out?. Is this true? What one has to do
if SPDIF in facility is required for use in the case of 8x-dlx board
?
c) 8x-dlx has DDR RAM whereas 8xe-dlx has DDR SDRAM? Is the second
one inferior ?
d) the introduction to e board in the specification sheet says that
e board has additional features and all the features of the older(
8x ) board are retained. But the above differences are noticed ?
Can you explain ?
Q.2:
What about the VM/400 board? Is the audio as good as the 8x-delux
board? How does one use the single Audio out connector on the back
panel to use a 5.1 pc speaker system? Because PC speakers like
creative 5.1 has 3 connectors ( front L/R, center and rear L/R.
Is the VM/400 as good as the delux boards?

i've got one of the original a7n8x boards, and i have to say it's by
far the best mobo i've ever had. Stable as a rock, great sound
(digital; dunno about analogue), and it seems pretty fast. In fact,
it works so well i'm scared to open up the case lest i hurt it
somehow. nForce2 rules.

The one thing that Firing Squad misses in it's motherboard reviews
is the history of support behind the company producing the
motherboard.
DFI may be getting the thumbs up in the review, but it's ASUS with
the history of producing regular patches, upgrades and bios features
for thier motherboards. I just don't see this with other
manufacturers. Yeah, they may support them out the door, but that
quickly drops when the next new MB's hit the market.
What's DFI's track record again? Who are they and how many MB's are
on the streets?

DFI board does have mounting holes, but the holes don't have silver
rims, and the black motherboard is sitting on a black background.

Might want to take a closer look. That was one of the revisions
made to the new board. You do have mounting holes.

Nice article guys, thou I am bit concerned to see the price
difference between these tow boards not mentioned.
Also wish you had put a XP2500 in the slot, and seen how far you
could over clock it in each board.
One last thing, do you know anything about the future of the Athlon
XP, having looked at AMDs roadmap they have two new versions of the
XP chip, you got any details on this? I am looking to replace a mb
with a failing second IDE port, and wondering if its worth buy a
SATA MB, basicaly if the XP is dead at 3200, then I will save my
cash and just get a cheap non SATA mb. Then when it comes time to
replace my CPU do a new board and prob mem and jump on the Athlon64
or P4 bandwagon.

i don't think you can really compare motherboards that aren't close
in price, at newegg, the z78nx-e is like $115, and the dfi is around
$170 (last time i checked) of course the DFI is going to have more
features, at a higher price, i have the a78nx-e deluxe, an it wokrs
great for my needs, runs smooth, and i thought it was kinda funny
that the game benchmarks, why would you do game benchmarks on a
mobo, there was like 1-1.5 fps difference, anyways for cost diff. i
would deff go with the a78nx-e deluxe, but if money isn't a issue,
get the DFI
