| | (Post a comment) » Xfire OverviewTired of the hassles involved in organizing your friends to play on a single server? Sick of playing alone because you don't know if your buddies are playing at all, never mind where, what or if the server is full? Xfire is for you. We explain how this amazing instant messaging client is going to do revolutionize multiplayer PC gaming like Xbox Live did for consoles, and we talk with Dennis "Thresh" Fong about his involvement with the project. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

I'm spoiled. One thing that I find extraordinarily useful is using
my laptop next to my game PC for IM-ing. Then I can actually IM
while I'm in the game just by briefly moving over to the laptop.
It'd be nice if Xfire could support simultaneous logins for the same
account (maybe by allowing one of the logins to be marked as the
gaming login to solve some of the game report issues). Then I could
use my current setup and have the advantage of easily joining games,
too :).
Also, I wrote my own little AIM bot that I use to as a favorites
pinger (so I can type an alias, say, "cooler" and get the
status of that server). That's currently what I use to coordinate
games with my friends. It'd be nice if there is a means to write
bots for xfire, preferably through java, perl, or an irc gateway.
Because, it's pretty cool pinging servers right there in the IM
client. :D
k thx, happyjoy

I downloaded this, and it seems to be very cool! I just added one
of those testfriend accounts, and he was an actual person! He was
very nice, and talked me thru a few things. I had my friend
download xfire, and he connected to a server, and it was VERY easy
to see what server he was in, and to connect to him. I also like
the fact that it actually pings the server to see how good of a
connection you will have with it before you connect. Please keep in
mind, i play counter-strike, and the friend's list is now down for
maintanance, and this XFIRE still works! forget the steam list,
this thing is awesome. I also play UT2003, and it seems to work
perfect with that. If anyone wants to play a game, my account is
"fubariceman". Trust me guys, this thing is cool. It
will be better once they get more stuff for it, but im sure they are
working on that!

I was wondering the same thing. I can follow buddies in ASE decent
enough already. And find out what server they are playing on and
double-click to join. It's even go auto-reconnect.

D11-Thresh was his name when he played, hence the Thresh11, nothing
to do with Thresh0-10 being taken :)
And Xfire is an invaluable program in that following friends to
public servers is really easy. True, Steam may be good for that but
that's only for CS (a game I don't even play). Like Fred said,
Xfire supports 60+ games and the list continues to grow. I use it
to follow friends into Q3/UT2003 games and it shaves at least 5-10
minutes off the process each time we go pubbing, not to mention no
hassle whatsoever.
I don't really have a problem using 2 IM clients, AIM for chatting
to RL friends and whatnot and Xfire for gaming, they both serve
different purposes, and you know you won't be getting those friends
who have no clue what a game is on your Xfire list so just bite the
bullet :)

It would be sweet if someone they would make XFIRE as a Trillian
Plugin. That way, you can get on ICQ, AOLIM, IRC, MSN, Y! and XFIRE
all with 1 proggy
