 Tiger Woods Out...Until August!

| | (Post a comment) » Silent Storm ReviewTurn-based strategy games have been in a funk for the past few years, but there's light at the end of the tunnel. Silent Storm from Nival Interactive has finally come to this side of the pond and Jakub got his grubby little hands on it. So what's Silent Storm? Think X-Com, with better combat, a World War II setting, and less worrying about overhead and base management. Is it any good? Yes, and read on to find out why! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

It's a good and fair review, but personal I think
the game deserves to be vomit on.

I just started playing it, so far it is proving to be an awesome
game. Yes the scoping time and other realisim feature makes this
game very good, but it is strangely reminiscent to the Fallout
series.

The combat is quite advanced, mainly because of the destructable
environments. I also like the sniping system with the rifle scope.
These things are good. However, the enemy AI sorely needs to be
improved. Many times, enemies would just bunch up or remain
stationary while you pop in-and-out behind from cover to slowly pick
them off. Also, the maps are quite small, but they still end up
taking hours to complete. So, to recap, great tactical engine, but
lacks a good enemy ai, as well as an engaging strategic layer (ala
X-COM & JA2). Missions get too boring after a while without it.

I tried out the demo and LOVED it. The only thing that really annoys
me is the lack of multiplayer. SS is exactly the kind of game I
would LOVE to play over a LAN. I'm not sure whether I'm willing to
pay $50 for a game that doesn't have multiplayer.
Although I haven't seen the super weapons in SS, I really wish that
tactical games would STOP implementing super weapons! They are lame!
What's the point of carefully setting your troops in position,
utilizing cover, and sneaking up on enemies when you could just
charge into the open and blast everything to smithereens in the
turn-based equivalent of the DooM guy BFG'ing a bunch of Imps.

It's a good and fair review, but personal I think the game deserves
the Editor's Choice award.
