| | (Post a comment) » BioWare Interview with Ray and GregRay Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk of BioWare were kind enough to spare some time from their hectic management schedules to answer some of Jakub's questions about BioWare. This in-depth interview goes into BioWare's past, present and especially the future. In addition, the two co-CEOs of BioWare offer their thoughts on the console vs. PC debate, from their unique perspective as elite developers on both kinds of platforms. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

look the problem with PC is >revenue< and that's all, it is
much easier to get a conistent stream of money from a console game
compared to a PC, and that is why consolitis is here to stay.
IMHO PC will stay a platform for which games will be developed but
mainly it will be either true enthousiasts who do so - ie for the
love of the game more than the money, which will bring new
innovative ideas that console players can only dram of, and games
that are tied in to internet checking via multiplayer.
As for single player experience style game as KOTOR and other FPS, I
think we will see other big gaming companies as Bioware shift to
consoles as that is where less interrupted revenue stram is, and
later on the game will be released on PC to capture some more $$$
when the sales of the game drop and piracy is not of paramount
impact on game sales anymore.
IMHO as long as they don't start chasing game copiers as RIAA does
(and software/piracy thing has a much longer history so I doubt they
ever will, as many of them were on the pirate side when they were
kids, or had no money to spare too) I am OK with that, as at the end
of the day it's all about making money, but PC as a platform has its
natural advanages.
In a way it's even better as PC will be less infested with the
Hollywood style blockbuster mentality. + when the gfx comes to par
with photorealisic in some 10 years there will be plenty of people
greating kick & games with up to date gfx engines (I can bet some
will be open source) all on PC.

They are really evasive about answering the questions for some
reason. Check out the second-to-last answer. The response has
nothing to do with the question. We get this enough from
politicians (especially Bush); is it too much to ask for software
developers to actually listen?
If you don't want to answer the question at least say something
like, "I beg your pardon, but please allow me to give this
important message to your viewers instead of answering your question
directly: <blah>". That way you show proper respect.

Loved this quote: "...others will be co-developed for both
console and PC, similar to how Star Wars: Knights of the Old
Republic was developed for PC and Xbox."
So in other words, there will continue to be games that get
"delayed" on the PC side for at least several months so
that all the console kiddies can buy it first. I like the marketing
spin on that. Yeah, they still make PC games and will hopefully
continue to do so, but I'm a little untrusting after KOTOR was
released as Xbox-only for a while. How long until we see a
Halo-type fiasco where the game is shifted to Xbox-only and the PC
port is a poor job and comes out over a year after the Xbox release?
Hopefully never, but I'm concerned.

Bioware is the one Publisher that I bought every release for the PC
platform (except MDK2, don't like action games). The way they keep
releasing top quality games I will probably continue to do so.
Hopefully ALL bioware titles will be ported to the PC.
Just wanted to say thanks to Ray and Greg for giving me so many
wonderful hours with their games. Just keep it up.
