See how ATI's latest multimedia card stacks up to the other ALL-IN-WONDER cards as well as the RADEON 9600 PRO and RADEON 9600 XT in today's review! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

I'm about to return my ati all-in-wonder card. It really sucks.
I'm having a hard time trying to figure out some of the feature.
Don't just read the cover, ati company lies on their cover.

Hi. I'm looking for info regarding this card (Radeon AIW
9600)ability to process video (I need to convert my VHS library to
VCD or DVD) and had heard the Pinnacle Studio8 software it comes
with was good for the task. Are you saying it's not? If so, is the
card itself good or not? You mentioned Sony's Video Editing
software as a good product; would this card be good for my intended
purposes if I added the Sony software to it?
Any help from you (or anyone else who sees this) would be very
welcome/appreciated.
Thanks!
JFrancisco

It would be nice if you would write a review on these types of cards
that focuses more on their video capturing and editing capabilities
than 3D gaming.
It's nice to know something about the 3D capabilities, but why not
limit it to 2 or 3 games and spend more time on capture quality,
DVD playback, editing features of the software.
So little is mentioned about these capabilities that this might as
well be a review about the std 9600 card. Things like actual dropped
frame with different file formats, bit rates and resolutions are
needed. Dropped frames during TV on demand, color saturation levels,
artifacting or graininess in played/captured video would be great.
What about ATi MMC? More info on the DVD player, automatic recording
cabilities, available formats, and still capture capability would be
helpful.
If a card is built for multimedia, then PLEASE gear the review
accordingly. if you don't have enough of a background in this area
to write such a review, then get someone to help you that does.

Excellent article, I bought a 9600 AIW awhile back to replace my
Ti4200 and haven't looked back. Runs all the games just fine and the
tuner's great. I especially like the Guide PLUS app, it's helped me
keep track of when Most Extreme Elimination Challenge is on :)

Does it matter? The coupon expires before the game is supposed to
ship. My guess is ATI and Valve will still honor the coupons but it
is funny to see the expiration date creep up before the game is
released.

The board was able to hit 210MHz on the memory but that was about
it, I didn't note much of a performance difference so didn't run the
numbers.
Also, you and Jaybird should write user reviews on your AIW cards,
gives people more than just our perspective on a product, and gives
you a voice.

A good article, the AIW 9600 Pro seems to be the better buy though,
with the HL2 coupon and free Remote Wonder 2. The combination of the
two raising the cost about 30 bucks retail.
I bought the AIW 9600 pro a little over a month ago for 200 at
CompUSA so it has gotten to that 200 price point.
I love the card it runs all my games well and the tuner is great,
however the only cons I'd add would be an inability to drag the TV
to the second screen in multi-moniter use, and the lack of support
for horizontal spanning in the extended desktop. Some games can make
use of that to take advantage of multiple moniters and unfortunately
it's not supported in the drivers at this point.
All in all, I'm very happy with the pruchase and would recommend it
to anyone looking for a multi-purpose graphics card for a reasonable
cost.

:S How odd the memory on the AIW 9600 was able to achieve
210(420ddr) My asus GF4 has the same samsung 4.0ns memory and it
easily does 275(550DDr)which is the spec for 3.6ns ram. I planning
on my last agp card to be a AIW ati radeon, I guess I'll look into
the HD/AIW9800xt when its available and price not through the roof.

As I mentioned in the review, I didn't have any stability problems
with MMC 8.9. The only program that crashed was EAZYSHARE TV Client,
everything else ran rock solid throughout, in fact I've never had a
stability problem with ATI's MMC software. All screenshots were
taken with the AIW 9600 w/ MMC 8.9's TV player and screen capture
features.
Personally I don't have any problems with Pinnacle Studio 8, the
only negative against it that I see is that it doesn't ship with PS
9 which is the latest version but I don't have any experience with
Sony's software. Also, even if you don't like the software, remember
that a TV tuner and REMOTE WONDER will set you back $80-100, putting
you over the price of the AIW 9600, hence the Bull's Eye. No, the
AIW 9600 doesn't ship with HL2 or any games.

Brandon, i question your judgement on giving this product a 'bull's
eye' as the bundled software is bording actual usefulness. Pinnicle
Studio 8 is one of the most lame apps ive used to date. i cant
IMAGINE how poor the 'special edition' is. wtf they dont call it
'product-already-dumbed-up dumbed-up-further editon' is beyond me.
lord knows it'd be closer to the truth and Muvee autoProducer is
questionable. even including MMC is a curse to a product as my
expierance has shown that is causes windows to crash more then
windows causes windows to crash! If ATI had included some QUALITY
applications i could understand the verdict. like perhaps Sony
Screenblast Movie Studio, WinDVR 3 and Nero 6. bundled software is
nigh ALWAYS POS. MSI's Media Center, ATI's MMC, Pinnicle's...
anything. the bundled Nero 6 'suite 1' with Pioneer's a106 is a
joke. Norton anything is a useless resource hog. pc-cillin is
getting lame.
so its been established that this card comes with nothing but crap
thats bordering usability. . . wanna run that by me again? just
because its an all-in-wonder doesnt make it great. However i am also
curious about the hl2 voucher, is it present?
overall the article was well writen and informative. and am pleased
(i know that is real important to EVERYONE here :p) with the
mannerism of which it was presented. i just had to flame bundled
software in general.
