| | (Post a comment) » S3 DeltaChrome S8 Nitro Performance PreviewS3's DeltaChrome is back up for testing again! This time around, we've taken the S8 and faster S8 Nitro out for a test drive. S3's newer driver also offers anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering, so we took the opportunity to compare its visuals against ATI and NVIDIA's latest and greatest. See how both cards perform against four other mainstream 3D cards in today's article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Yes but if the cutting edge didnt exist then 9600's would cost $400
so you need to innovate to get the mainstream down in price.
After all, I bet the majority of people on here have ti4x00 or low
range ATI cards. You arent MADE to buy the new cards afterall.
As for people flaming FS for reviewing something new -
What is your problem? The majority of people on here want MORE
content not less.

I hear ya, but my point is this: I don't need a full review of a
product that doesn't touch the competition. I just feel like FS is
giving S3 lip service, which might be understandable if S3 comes out
with a killer card in the future and FS can say "we've been
following S3 since way back when...". But even if that
happens, who does it benefit? Not me.

From Page3.asp:
"We’re going to crank out the magnifying glass and focus in on
the area just beneath the rocket launcher. The screenshots below are
taken with a 500% zoom."
Liars! When I compare the size of the rocket launcher in the full
screenshot to the one in the "zoomed" image, it's the
same. I think someone forgot to actually Resize the images.
Needless to say, without magnification, I can't see much of a
difference.
For the rest of the posts, yes, S3 sucks. But so did ATI at one
point, back when 3dfx reined supreme and Nvidia was gaining on them.
The Rage 2C chips were so common for a long time, and they were
about the same quality as the S3 Virge chips. S3 almost managed to
climb out of the cellar with the Savage 2000, but drivers killed
them and instead of fixing the problems, they just disappeared for
four years.
The previews I've been seeing of the DeltaChrome don't give me a
whole lot of confidence. "OpenGL performance will be addressed
shortly." If it's like the Savage 3D/4/2000 drivers, they'll
release a few tweaks that get Quake 3 and maybe a couple other
OpenGL games working better, but on a whole they will never work
properly. Maybe DeltaChrome 2005/2006 will be a different story.

Yeah, competition is good. But not when it the hardware competition
outpaces the software development. And we the consumers end up with
is a huge tech bubble and stock market crash in the late 90's. And a
majority of the gamers running on video cards that are 12-19 months
old. Then the software development lags to accomodate for the slower
and older computers.
That's why we have DirectX 9+ video cards out and very few DirectX 9
games. What's the point of buying a high-end card when you can't see
it's full potential until 1 year after?

I think varied reviews are a good idea. keep it up FS!
As for the S3, nice benchmarks in the synthetic but what the hell
happened when it came to games.....
oh well, a pity. I really wanted this to work so we can get some
price cuts out of ati/nvidia.
Competition is GOOD.

well would you prefer firingsquad not review it and leave you
ignorant as to how the card performs in comparison to other cards on
the market? be glad that you now know the card is not worthy of your
money.

For mohammed's sake, why oh why does FS review S3 graphics cards? I
genuinely look forward to every FS article but when I see it wasted
on a freakin' S3 card, I just gotta rant. Give me an S3 review
when, and only when, S3 puts something impressive out on the market.
You might as well be reviewing 17" monitors. It's pointless.
I can only assume some ca$h is involved, because I know FS has
better sense than to voluntarily review this garbage.

It seemed to beat the FX5600 on the majority of the benchmarks, and
also performed decent on DX9 games in relation to the other cards.
I support having as much competition as possible, because the
consumer benifets in the end. I want to see S3 do well.

Speaking of which, does anyone know what's happening with the
Volari? I have't heard any info for a while, just wondering what XGI
is up to. Thanks.
