(Post a comment) » Tek Panel 300 Quick TakeWhat happens when you combine a Pentium 4 3.2GHz Extreme Edition processor with an ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe, RADEON 9800 XT, and, get this, a 30" TFT/LCD screen all into one aluminum chassis? Hy-Tek's Tek Panel 300 of course! This $8K system is one serious workhorse and looks good as well. In fact, the Tek Panel 300 is featured on NBC's new reality TV show The Apprentice. Find out what makes this high-end system tick in our latest article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

I called the Manufacturer of the TekPanel...nice people by the way
They told me that these are niche machines that can be made to suit
the customer, if wireless is what you want, you can have it. You can
also get the AMD chips,HDTV tuners, a PCI expansion slot, whatever
color and finish. This is THE Custom Box.

I could see this more usefull to a business than than home use as
many people here only think of. this would be a handy thing for
board meetings, a display in the lobby, display at a trade show.
instead of having a computer, projector and screen you have
everything in one

I think the key is that it's not so much that it's a fast computer
(it's fast because you want to be able to play Windows Media HD
files) as it is a well-designed and thought out system. The Tek
Panel is first and foremost about the screen. This is actually a
good idea because long after new CPUs come out, the system as a
whole will still have the wow factor from the monitor.
With regard to having the extra box, this is part of luxury. No
one needs this system, but as Alexis mentioned, for some people
it'll be a cool alternative to that family vacation because it'll be
something that you'll use every day for years.
The Athlon FX would have been a faster system, however I think the
main reason they went with the Pentium 4 plaform is that it allows
them to scale the performance up and down. In the bare-minimum
configuration, you can have an P4 2.4 GHz. With the Athlon FX,
you're always dealing with flagship performance and so it's harder
for them to offer a lower-end product.
Ultimately, the cost of the system is in the screen as opposed to
the components. The other 30" screens from Dell, for example,
aren't the wide S-IPS technology.

I don't understand what the big deal is about having a separate box
for your hardware. Are people who spend 8k on a system so short on
space? I can barely afford a system half as fast (and many times
cheaper) than this and I can find dozens of places to stick an HTPC.
It's not even remotely worth the limit on
components/expandability/overclocking that's imposed. Besides, you
can get a really cool looking HTPC case with an LCD display and
other mods. And not even an HDTV tuner card or wireless LAN? Feh!
