| | (Post a comment) » ASUS L5000GA ReviewLooking for a high-end desktop replacement notebook that won't drain all the funds out of your bank account? ASUS' L5000GA may be just the system for you! Our review system sported a 3.2GHz Pentium 4 processor with 1GB of DDR400 SDRAM, ATI's MOBILITY 9600 PRO graphics, 802.11g Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet, and an 80GB hard drive with an 8MB cache. This system sells for just under $2,500 and is capable of keeping up with a tuned P4P800 Deluxe system we setup with performance-enhancing features such as MAM and Turbo Mode enabled. But we haven't even mentioned the notebook's best feature, its jaw-dropping 15" ACE View display. See how this system stacks up to the Alienware's and Dell Inspiron XPS's of the notebook world in this review! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

I use a L5000GA for professional software development, and due to
the fact, i have been 'stuck' on laptops for many years, i have not
played any 1st person shooters. I have just acquired a copy of
Medal of Honor: Allied Assult - yes i know its old now, but it runs
brilliantly. Have a set all the video settings to the highest
detail running at 1280x1024, and i havent noticed any issues. If
you need some mobility with grunt then this is for you.
NB: As this laptop is a true desktop replacement, be aware this
beast is on the heavy side (3.9kg), and as a power supply to sink a
samll boat.

Not that impressive.
I got the 2.8GHZ Gateway M675, 17 inch screen, 80 gig HD, x4 did
burner, 512m or ram, Mobility 9600, everything you can think of on a
laptap for 1600 bucks. With the omega drivers, it gets 2900 on
3dmark03.

Not bad, if you want cheap and powerfull, get an emachines m6809.
I've got one and get around 2900 on 3dmark2003 depending on how much
i overclock the graphics card (plain jane mobile 9600).
Haven't had any problems with it and the only thing keeping it back
is the 1280x800 15.4" widescreen. Wish it was higher res.
Lasts a good deal longer than 60-90 minutes, too.

The best part about owning a laptop with wireless internet, is being
able to take it anywhere around the house. Especially when you get
that sudden urge to take a crap and you just can't stop reading that
great article or those great anonymous post in firingsquad. You
haven't lived until you surfed the web while taking a crap, let me
tell you.

I recently got a Dell XPS and I must say it is pretty nice. I'd been
looking for a laptop for a while and the main thing holding me back
was the graphics cpabilities. I almost went with an Alienware 51m
but Dell had a newer card (ATI 9700). Dell also offers an upgrade
for XPS owners to the next card when it is released, though it is
only one upgrade, and you DO need to buy the card, they will send a
technician out to install it free. I think the speaker setup is
pretty good for a laptop (one on either side of the keyboard by the
screen and a subwoofer in the battery) but I wish there was an audio
option without powering up the laptop like with the Asus. I got it
during Dell's 20th anniversary 20% off sale so with a 7200rpm 60Gb
HD, 802.11g card, 512MB RAM, 3.4Ghz proc it was just under $2200.

You'd need to call the reseller to get that question answered. I
believe the L5000GA starts at $1,300 but that includes the CPU, HD,
etc.

I should also add that the L5000GA doesn't have ATI PowerPlay
enabled in the current driver. Perhaps if ASUS had implemented that
the battery would have lasted a little longer.
