They're launching Socket 939 and spreading that multiple of three love like there's no tomorrow, what with the Athlon 64 3800+ and a 939 version of the FX-53. Chris takes a detailed look at both processors and compares them against their closest cousins as well as the nearest competitors from Intel, providing a variety of synthetic benchmarks, as well as results from the resolution extremes of real-world games. I see that Newegg is selling the processor but not any 939
motherboards yet. At least you can be the first to say you have
one, you just can't use it, he he. Why doesn't AMD sell chipsets
and motherboards along with processors? Is it just so they don't
compete against VIA and NVIDIA?

I think youguys (FS) are doing a diservice by not mentioning this.
The via agp lock doesn't work in a nutshell. From anand...
"While we are here at Computex, we have been able to talk with
many manufacturers about the PCI/AGP locks on the VIA K8T800 PRO and
the nVidia nForce3-250. We have also talked with VIA. Right now, the
PCI/AGP lock works on every nForce3-250 chipset that we have tested,
while it works on some VIA K8T800 PRO chipsets, but does not work on
others. It appears from the information we have right now that the
VIA PCI/AGP lock is not a reliable or consistent feature on the
K8T800 PRO chipset... In fact, we are very disturbed at the chaos
that seems to surround the VIA implementation of the PCI/AGP lock at
the manufacturers that we have talked with here at Computex. Some
have proclaimed the feature is so unstable that they will not
include it in VIA K8T800 PRO boards, while others say the feature is
actually broken in the majority of the chipsets that they are
currently receiving from VIA.
VIA themselves acknowledge that there is a problem with the AGP/PCI
lock feature on the K8T800 PRO chipset, though they state the
feature does work for limited overclocking in shipping chipsets -
and will be quickly and completely fixed as soon as they can
determine the factors that are causing the instability and
inconsistency in the current PCI/AGP lock"
I am only saying this b/c it would be relevant to the conclusion of
your review.

Actually, the Asus A8V for Socket 939 CPUs has been available from
certain retailers for almost 2 weeks now. Granted, up until now you
couldn't get a 939 CPU to throw in there, but the boards are there.

I don't know the exact upgrade path, but they're moving to dual core
processors soon. The real interesting thing, though, will be whether
or not they go with dual memory controllers as well. With each core
having it's own memory controller (similar to current dual processor
systems) memory performance in a UMA-enabled OS (like Longhorn) will
be stellar. Especially if the upgrade the memory controllers to
support Quad Band Memory. >:)

umm. not sure what vaporware you are talking about but these chips
are already available on a couple of sites that you may already
know. Newegg for example.
just a heads up
AMD is pretty good about the no vaporware thing

That is because it's easier to put the chip into the hands of the
reviewer than into the mass market. My guess is that they will come
out pretty quick now that the 939 market has opened up.
