 Tiger Woods Out...Until August!

| | (Post a comment) » Thief: Deadly Shadows ReviewGarretteo, Garretteo, wherefore art though a thiefeo? Well, it turns out in this installment of the franchise you get to find the reason for that (actually, I lied) and whole more more about Garrett than you knew before (not lying this time). But is Thief: Deadly Shadows a good game? Can a different developer ever recreate the experience that the fans of the originals want, while at the same time advancing the game? | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

I loved Thief 1 and 2. I think those games did the stealth aspect
quite well, forcing the player to keep an eye and ear open for
trouble instead of just glancing at a SONAR screen i.e. MGS1 and 2.
I think the Thief series can be compared to Splinter Cell on the
basis of stealth and immersion, but other than these factors, they
are entirely different games. The fantasy trappings and weird, dark
technology creates a perfect mix of atmosphere in the Thief games,
and for me, this is what I loved most about Thief 1 and 2. No
matter where you were in Thief 1 or 2, there would always be a dull
or pulsing auditory background that would perfectly capture where
you were in the level, and as fas as I know, no other game has done
that quite the same.
People seem to think that Thief DS remains true to the originals,
but I disagree. The engine change, which definately enhanced the
graphics and physics, resulted in a game that felt a lot different
from the originals. (Thief was never about graphics anyway, as fans
know). Since it was designed as a 3rd person game (?), the 1st
person spacial movements seem too delayed and loose (e.g. if you
change direction, your character will not respond as fast or as
precisely as in Thief 1 or 2). However, these are minor details.
While the stealth element was kept up well in DS, the small levels
and loading times TOTALLY kill the immersion, especially when you
compare DS to the huuuge and seamless levels of the originals (such
as the 2nd level of Thief 2, which I thought was genius in its
intricacy). I liked the idea in DS of a public market, but the
levels were just too #! small. I can't imagine a loyal Thief

Splinter Cell might have been good IF it wasn't *incredibly* linear.
Sure it's easy to design levels on such basis... now go and try to
make a huge area like the ones seen in Thief 2 work as well. Quite a
challenge.

Cradle really bothered me (as it should have but ina good way), gave
me the goosebumps. Could have the been the sotry leading up to it
from the inspector, the burned out candle or even the foreshadowing
which appeared throught the game in the load screens. T3 was a
pretty good game although T2 was better. By the way it played
really well on my Athlon 1400, 512MB, and Radeon 6500XT 256MB. The
review was fair but why spend $35 on a game only to play it as a run
and gun ruining the game's design? Oh, wait those who run and gun
probably didn't pay for it.

I agree, Splinter Cell is one of the worst games Ive ever played and
was shocked that the reviewer mentioned it.
IMO splinter Cell is proof that stealth games have a long way to go.

I liked Thief: Deadly Shadows, it really kept the same feel as the
earlier Thief games. However, it would be even better if Eidos
decided to release the editor as there is so much that could be done
with it.
If you agree then why not check out www.thiefpetition.com and let
Eidos know!
