| | (Post a comment) » ATI MOBILITY 9700 Performance PreviewATI's first generation DX9 mobile chip, M10, introduced the gaming world on-the-go to 2.0 pixel and vertex shaders, earning rave reviews in the process. Now ATI is back with M11, better known as MOBILITY 9700. With MOBILITY 9700 ATI boasts better performance and excellent visuals, but how does it compare to M10 and ATI's desktop offerings? "To answer some of your other questions, no the
MOBILITY X600 isn't the successor to the 9700,
more like the PCI Express equivalent. We explained
this in detail in our article a few months ago.
The real successor to the MOBILITY 9700 is coming
VERY soon though."
Good to know :D Looking forward to some 8 pipe, 256-bit, DX9 mobile
goodness :D
Glad you guys have not been sitting around doing nothing, but it is
an issue when articles take forever to come out. It's still useful
as a reference source, but I often won't read the whole thing
because I've read three or four from other sites.

The reason the article is delayed is because since I received the
Inspiron in April I've made 1 trip to San Jose, 2 trips to Canada,
and 1 trip to Taiwan, with multiple product launches (X800, 6800,
NVIDIA SLI, Far Cry 1.2, etc) in between.

I have to concur with the other statements. The Mobility Radeon
9700 has been available in Dell laptops for several months at least.
I recall seeing a review quite a while back on Tom's Hardware
Guide.
A better question, of course, is why this chip deserves the name
9700 as opposed to 9600 XT. A 9700 desktop chip is significantly
different from the 9600. Twice as many pipelines, and a 256-bit
memory path do a hell of a lot for performance. I guess ATI is just
getting in on the "higher model numbers equal higher
performance, but should not be compared with different groups of
technology" game. Heheh

How does this compare with Nvidia's latest mobile offerings? This is
what I want to see.

This chip has been out since February and is used in Sager 8790
notebooks. Any news on the M12? That's what fans are waiting
for, the next upgrade.
The big news in the laptop world right now is AMD 3200+ making their
way into Sagers with the 4750. In fact, people are just starting to
receive them now.

'Mobility' reminds me of a powered wheel chair.
-With an old women on it scooting around in circles and up a ramp
