 Tiger Woods Out...Until August!

| | (Post a comment) » GeForce 6600 PreviewThere's been a gap in NVIDIA product lines for a while, no answer to that magically delicious GeForce Ti4200 which had the right price and the right performance for most performance-oriented gamers without an unlimited budget. NVIDIA hopes to remedy the lack of such a solution this cycle with the introduction of the GeForce 6600 line of cards. Brandon gets a sneak preview of the card NVIDIA hopes will be the ultimate price/performance solution. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

I know this is the dumbest question, and I don't think it is
possible but does anyone know if you can physically remove the AGP
bridge so at a later date you could make your card a pci version? I
wish NV were thinking forward as to making the bridge removable but
I doubt it.

I doubt it. I'm betting that it is close to the 9800 Pro in
performance, and that some benchmarks will go to the 9800 while
others will go to the 6600 GT. The 9800 Pro has more memory
bandwidth, but the 6600 GT has a much more powerful GPU.
As for the price, the only 9800 Pro you can get at $150 is the one
with the 128-bit memory. That model would probably be crushed by the
6600 GT. The 256-bit 9800 Pro is still closer to the $200 mark.

It probably will be noticeably slower than 9800 pro plus you can buy
a 9800 pro for about $150 now.

Two 6600 in sli will probably only get near 6800 gt speed, and when
you factor in the dual pci express board's extra cost, and the fact
that by the time you can get dual pci express boards the 6800 gt
will likely be selling for about $250 it won't be a cost effective
alternative. The smart thing to do is ride out your current video
card until dual pci express mobos are available and then pick up a
pair of pci express 6800 GTs when they will be much cheaper because
of the fall refresh cards which probably won't make it until late
winter with Nvidia's and ATI's production production problems on
their high end cards.

Well if 2 of these card with 256 MB in SLI can make for a 512 MB
and Double that 128 bits memory to make 256 bits and 1 GB + 1GB
addup to 2 GBs could equal a 6800 killer if there priced at $150
each.

The 6600GT could be really interesting if paired with 512MB of ram.
Though I'll have to wait for reviews of shipping boards.
and oh yeah, does anyone else think that the plain vanilla 6600 will
be a hell of an overclocker? It will probably be bandwidth limited
as hell, but you can probably get a nice fill rate out of it.

Yeah....
9500 Pro -> 8 pipes @ 275 MHz, 128 bit memory @ 540
6600 GT -> 8 pipes @ 500 MHz, 128 bit memory @ 1000
I'm sure it will BARELY outperform your 9500 Pro....

This card doesn't sound like it'll be much faster than my 9500pro.

Its still no good for Intel fans since they would have to go with a
Xeon board if they are looking for SLI, plus none of the SLI cards
are even out, so it still doesn't really matter. I'm still
believing that the SLI cards will come out the same time(if not with
in a week) of the "nForce4" being announced and then
shortly shipped.

Actually, the 6600GT looks very promising. The memory is only
128-bit, but at 500MHz DDR, it still provides a decent amount of
bandwidth (16GB/S). The core only has 8 pipes, but they run at
500MHz, which is significantly higher than the 6800/6800GT. For
$200, it looks like it's comparable to a 5900XT or 9800 Pro, except
it has the potential for SLI.
Now, nVidia, get off your ASSES and get PCI Express out there for
the Athlon 64! WTF good are these cards if we can't plug 'em into
anything?! (Apologies to the Intel fans)
