PNY, a tier one NVIDIA manufacturer with Quadro production exclusivity in America, might have just the right offering for you. Brandon takes a look at the card, complete with a 6800 Ultra, X800 Pro and 6800 vanilla for comparison in all benchmarks - including Doom 3! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Hi, I'm just wondering what software or what exactly did the ppl at
firingsquad use to overclock the video card? My friend told me that
nvidia driver has a hidden option which can be enabled through
certain registry change. Anyway, anyone who knows how to please let
me know. Thanks.

Man, what happened to the days when a $300 video card was top of the
line? Seems like just yesterday....wait a minute.... it was! None
of the new cards released will EVER be the next Ti4200 for one
simple reason, price. Back when I bought my Ti4200 $200 was the
price you paid for a mid-level card and $300 was what you paid for
the top of the line Ti4600. Now it seems that $200 cards have been
reduced to 'value' a.k.a. Geforce4MX status (shudder). I paid
around $200 for my Voodoo2, Geforce2 and my Ti4200 but now I'm going
to have to shell out $350 to get a comparable experience. I think
that NVIDIA and ATI are starting to price themselves too high to
make PC gaming worth it for anybody except die-hard hardware
fanatics.

I don't know but I don't want a card from a brand that has a box
that makes me question my sexuality.

Who would want a PNY video card though? Have you seen the back of
the box? This is the horrible $#& thing found on the back of the box
of the 6800GT and probably Ultra.
"Like a pheonix out of the ashes, my journey began. From heat
and flame, fire permeated my being, beginning my evolution and
awakening the forces within me. I am not human, I am not machine, I
am unknown. Cathartic water has purified me, regenerating who I am.
The aqueous fluid alters my skin, mutating its very nature. My
beating heart propels me towards the future and away from my dark
past. I am power. I am speed. I am imagination. I am transformation.
My world will become your reality. Come on the journey with me, let
me drench your senses and immerse you in my visual universe. There's
no going back."
I am sorry but I am afraid that buying a PNY video card would make
me $#&.

well look at how fast the prices came down on the 9800 pro and non
pro versions. I didn't say the Ultra and XT versions would drop
fast, they never do. But the Pro and GT models prices should fall
much faster. BTW the list on these cards is $400 but the retailers
that have them in stock are charging closer to $500 right now, so
even waiting anoter month could make $100 dollar difference on a
6800 GT or X800 Pro. Like you said the upcoming X800 GT will shake
up the price structure as well.

Actually high end producers of power supplies such as antec and
enermax are already addressing this by building power supplies with
two seperate 12 volt rails to handle the increased load.

Also, can you imagine the power supply that sort of setup is going
to require. You'd need 25A (300watts) on the 12V rail for the
processor and video cards alone. I'd say we're not too far from
dual power supply systems or external power bricks for video cards,
ah la Voodoo 5 6000.

You'd actually want the water at 4°C so it has maximum density
and thus more molecules to transfer heat to. Heat will naturally
flow from a warm body to a cooler body until they reach equilibrium.
With a constant flow of water that never reaches equilibrium with
the heatsink's temperature, you would want to maximize the number of
molecules that could carry the heat away, thus the 4°C
temperature setting should work the most efficiently.
