| | (Post a comment) » StarForce Interview and Piracy DiscussionOver the past few months there's been a growing furor over copy protection that is increasingly invasive and sometimes difficult to remove. Some give this alleged evil a name, "StarForce". But what's the truth behind this company and their software? To help answer this, we went straight to the horse's mouth and now we have an exclusive interview with a company representative who provides responses to the allegations and also explains why the software works like it does. On top of that, Jakub delivers some commentary on the general subject of piracy. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

>>"'I wouldn't buy it anyway' - doesn't matter, fact is
you didn't pay for it but benefited from the labor of the publisher
and developer - that's theft."
What's real theft? The computer industry has hired outsourcing
firms that enslave foreign populations into poisonous atmospheres in
sweatshops. Interplay didn't pay its employees, but made sure to
pay its CEOs, and was subsequently fined $187,000 by the state of
California. That's not theft that the workers gave their labor in
exchange for a salary that never comes in? What about defective
gaming? A lot of software publishers, ESPECIALLY in the gaming
area, are putting out a lot of programs that simply do not work.
There's about a one in ten success story for the game "State of
Emergency" -- that game simply does not run, yet Electronics
Boutique won't take it off the shelves and won't give me my $20
back. Corporate crime is responsible for seven times the amount of
damage caused by private crime. And yet... the Firing Squad
editing team is asphyxiating on its own vomit, struggling with weak
and pathetic phrases to defend the industry that pays them: the
gaming industry.
The CEOs don't do the programming, or the artwork, or the anything
really. And by pirating, you steal from them. In fact, if you
don't pirate, then you're really stealing, because you become the
accomplice to theft by buying a computer game. The money you pay
for that game goes to the CEOs who work ever so hard to lower the
wages of programmers of artists. The more you pay for, the less you
pirate, the more responsible you are for real theft. End of
discussion.

"Here is a fact about copy protection - it does not stop
piracy,
and only rarely even slows it down. Most pirates know how to get
cracked copies, and will do so whether the copy protection is a
simple CD check or the most complicated system-farking process
out there. Serious and casual gamers who don't pirate (that's
most of us, including me) know how to by simply hitting one of a
handful of sites or usenet and grabbing a cracked executable. My
point, again - copy protection is meaningless for these people.
They just ignore it. "
Indeed.

You are idiot mate, and selfish as well for make such immature
comments. Just because STARFORCE doesn't affect your system doesn't
mean it doesn't affect others. Its your type of attitude which
explain why the world is so stuffed! I am completely legitimate in
all my software and I don't use products like ALCOHOL 120% on my
machine. Yet STARFORCE causes my system to become unstable to the
point where I have to use a system restore or re-image. An
un-install of STARFORCE isn't good enough, the product is a virus. I
am currently seeking legal advise for the damage it has done to my
system (something which is really easily to demonstrate) as well as
talking to consumer affairs about forcing Manufactures who use
STARFORCE to clearly label there products. Game manufactures should
note that products like STARFORCE still have an negative impact. I
purchase my software and will never again purchase software that
uses STARFORCE. You have losted a paying customer.

Abbie Sommer: If a gamer buys a game and has difficulty getting it
to run, they should contact the publisher and provide as many
details as possible up front in the initial email. If the problem
has anything to do with our copy protection and a publisher's
support team can’t solve it, we freely give advice and try to work
out their problem, often working directly with the end-user to speed
up the process. Regarding not being able to use CloneCD, our
protection won't work because it must see the disc before it will
allow the game to run. This is common for disc based protections.
About the fine line, when you buy a game and install it, typically
you are licensed to use it on a single PC at a time. Taking a disc
out, or putting a disc in a drive takes less than a minute. When the
game is not being played, a user can use CloneCD again.
- WTG LIMP $$%%!
Seriously, wtf kinda cop out %%!$ is this?
Any protection that prevents a LEGAL OWNER FROM MAKING A LEGAL
BACKUP (FOR WHEN YOUR CHEAP DISC GETS SCRATCHED TO HELL JUST FROM
PLAYING IT) has FAILED as a solution. If there was a word better
than COMPLETE FAILURE, I would use it. However all they really care
is that it's hard to crack.
