| | (Post a comment) » GeForce 6600 GT Pentium 4 Scaling PerformanceA mainstream GeForce 6600 GT truly won't break the bank, but will its performance keep up with the latest games on slower Pentium 4 processors? Today Brandon examines the 6600 GT's performance when paired up with four different Pentium 4 Prescott processors. See how the GeForce 6600 GT, RADEON 9800 PRO, and GeForce 6800 fare when put to the grueling test! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

I think the 2xAA is just being 'realistic' to the 6600's. Dont get
me wrong, they are great cards, but just like 9800pro's with 128bit
memory bus, performance suffers, especially as you increase
AA/AF/resolution/texture size... However, the low price makes it a
bargain for those who do not obsessivly require 8XAA and 16xAF @
2048x1536... or else they'll just have a fit.
(PS: True 2xAA for nVidia is still not so good. But it would be more
embarassing if 9800pro beat the 6600's... not quite a showcase of a
500Mhz card, no?)
Brandon: Good article. No beef about < 2.8Ghz... can always
extrapolate, given 3 points, right. But, then again, that 2.8E score
throws that theory out the window. So I guess we'd be looking for 3
(or more) points that cover all people's expected speeds. Ex: Still
plenty of people using 2.4C... hell even 2.4B. So maybe 2.4B, 2.4C,
2.8C, 2.8E, 3.2E, (3.6E)... cause you get the platform comparison
for free ;)
Realistically, though, drop the 2.4B.

Just wondering why Nvidia are hamstringing themselves by releasing a
PCI-E only graphics chipset when they themselves don't yet have a
PCI-E chipset available.
I could understand maybe not bothering with releasing a
Nforce2-pci-e chipset, but not having a Nforce3-pci-e chipset is
just madness. Having checked the Nvidia website they say they have
plans for pci-e chipsets but nothing to announce beyond that, not
even a Q4 04, or Q1 05 release date.

Darn, you could have delayed the article a bit and retested the 9800
Pro with the newer 4.9s since they greatly improve performance in
games like UT2004 with AA. Also could we get a bit more performance
reviews in the future with 4xAA on the 6600GT because nVidia's 2xAA
isn't exactly of the best quality :P.

Well, AMD chips can't be used until a PCI-E chipset is available for
them. :) That's also the reason why I was limited to going as low as
2.8E, there just isn't an LGA-775 chip slower than 2.8GHz.
As far as AGP 6600 GT availability, I don't think we'll see it until
October unfortunately. Leadtek USA will have their PCI-E GeForce
6600 (non-GT) by the end of this month, with the GT following a
little bit later.

Difference would be that they would have to use a different
motherboard, and setup corresponding Windows, drivers etc...
I'm fairly certain 'they' ran test on 2.8 then switched CPU (dont
need to mess with drivers), and switched again etc... only had to
install drivers/ reinstall windows 2 times, for each vendor gfx
card.
PS: Sucks to have a 2.8E, no? (see the poor results in VST) Perhaps
its the one with 533fsb, less cache or something?
