| | (Post a comment) » Half-Life 2 VST/Counter-Strike Source Beta CPU Shootout: AMD vs IntelNow that we've discussed Half-Life 2 video stress test and Counter-Strike: Source beta performance with dozens of graphics cards, it's now time to evaluate the CPUs. In this article we've rounded up Athlon 64 FX, Athlon 64, Athlon XP, Pentium 4, and Pentium 4 Extreme Edition processors. See which CPUs come out on top at various clock speeds, including clock-for-clock comparisons with Prescott and Northwood in this article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

the article comes off as Intel biased, as you have done two things.
1. compared just one against the other directly. If you compared all
the processors on one page you could see that @ 1600*1200 the CPU is
not the limiting factor, apart from the slowest ones.
2. And additionally you compared the old "high range" but
what is essentialy a value processor in AMD line now, against the
high-mid range for Intel. XP3200 would be better suited to go
against top of the range Intel CeleronD than against P4C. (probably
in the similar price range as well)
Butnin principle the article shows one way or antother that @
resolutions we all want to play on GPU power is much more important
than pure CPU speed.

Which is why they test at 1600x1200 with 6xFSAA and 8xaniso. (My
bad for the 4xFSAA previously!)
If that's not trying to use up the graphics bandwidth, then I'm not
sure what is...

It's not as bad as you think.
For one, this shootout shows to all computer newbies that a
processor is probably the most overrated component when it comes to
building a system for gaming, besides low-latency ram.
Who in their right mind would buy a $400-500US videocard and not
play at 1600x1200 4AA/8AF? at which point a XP2400+ paired with
X800xt will be faster than A64 3800+ and 9800XT, and still provide
playable framerates unlike the latter.
CPU performance should be primarily measured in terms of office
apps, server apps, encoding/decoding, multimedia and so on. The
basic flaw of 90% of computer builders out there is spending $250 on
a processor and $250 on a videocard. But if you primary purpose is
to play games, then you should spend $150 on a processor and $350 on
a videocard, or more. I personally think that a videocard should be
upgraded 2x for every 1 cpu upgrade.
This review then helps to show 2 things:
1. cpu performance means jack since at low res, any cpu with a
6800/x800xt gets 100+-150+ frames anyways, so what difference does
it make if you have AXP2500+ or FX53 since you probably wont play at
these resolutions and instead will want to maximize your image
quality since you still have plenty of room to maintaintain playable
framerates while doing so
2. for some serious gaming and image quality, you should always
think GPU not CPU. When it comes to upgrading for gaming, cpu
should be the last thing on your mind, because your neighbour next
door with AXP1800+ and 6800GT is probably laughing at your A64 3700+
and Radeon 9700Pro when he is playing Doom 3, Far Cry, etc.
Sure if you have the money it makes sen

I have a dvd burner and just burn the valve directory when I do
fresh instal of my OS. All you have to do is copy the directory
back into program files and when you reconnect to steam it only
takes a few minutes to reinstall the games and it even remebers all
of your settings.

You thought firingsquad knew what they were doing? lol. I guess you
will never be that naive again. This is the land of trolls,
fanboys, incompetent hardware reviewers, and late irrelevant game
reviews.

"Testing at 1600x1200 with 4xAA is pretty much useless, as (to
me) it's pretty apparent that the FPS is limited by the graphics
card..."
Which is why just above that 1600x1200 graph are low resolution
results without AA/AF.
