Descent 3 is still played today.
Many people think it isn't worth the effort because they can't get
over the learning hump.
Once you master it, you'll be addicted. Until that time, it can be
frustrating to learn the 6 degrees of movement.

I still use a parallel port powered PS/1 dual shock controller. I
still havent found anything that will beat it on a PC. Twin
analogue "hats" a D pad, 4 shoulder and 4 buttons to
choose from will make mince meat out of most games.
Deser combat plays well when flying or driving. Toca Race Driver 2
is a dream to play and I still play XWing alliance occasionally!
Seriously go out and build an adaptor or buy a USB adaptor.
Fantastic controllers at bargain prices!

I always thought that joystick controls on the PC were very clunky
and hard to get configured. I've tried so many different types of
gamepads it isn't funny. Almost all of them have some sort of
quirk. I own no fewer than 4 gamepads, and I'm not completely
content with any of them. I've owned more than that in the past.
----------
Most Microsoft gamepads are otherwise decent, but have their
directional pad rotated at an infuriating 15 degree angle, making it
nearly impossible to move completely straight in any direction.
My Logitech Wingman Rumblepad would otherwise be a great controller,
but it seems to suffer from minor input delay....which wouldn't
sound bad, but gets extremely irritating when in heated gameplay.
Thrustmaster gamepads have good designs, but terrible drivers, and
are rarely if ever supported in games.
I thought my Logitech Dual Action gamepad would be the answer to all
my problems because it's almost an exact replica of the PS2
controller. Unfortunately, games like Madden don't perceive it as
giveing a 100% movement in any direction even when correctly
calibrated, so players will jog instead of run. Unacceptable.
One thing that Console systems have going for them is quality of
controls. Game makers know exactly what's going to be used, so they
make sure it works pefectly with them. Unfortunatly we don't have
that on the PC, so we've got all kinds of clunky products with
problems.

Man who uses joysticks anymore in this day and age, especially with
the lack of games? There haven't hardly been any decent *popular*
(i.e. lots of servers+players) multiplayer games to play them with.
The only games I remember that were any kind of fun with a stick
were Descent2, Descent3 and Freespace series (1&2), most of the
rest were forgettable or not worth the effort. It's too bad
freelancer turned out to be such garbage, I played through it and
still think the move to mouse only in that game was the worst
decision ever. Not to mention the ship models looked horrendously
ugly.

I had an x36 a while ago with the dodgy keyboard and mouse pass
through. Rather annoying to set up but I loved it. I didnt even play
sims with it mosta the time i was playing g-police forsaken and
mechwarrior. I think im the only person I ever met who liked
gpolice.
Unfortuatly the X36 doesnt work on XP and also my student house desk
isnt exactly huge. Also gpolice 2 never got released on PC.

I have the Saitek Cyborg Gold 3d...which I think is the older
version of the EVO. Jakub is right on the money...it's a great
stick for the price although driver install can be a little
troublesome. The ability to adjust it and make it left-handed is
what originally sold it for me and I've been pleased ever since.

1. No money to buy it with.
2. I'm not hardcore enough a simmer to review that kind of hardware
and compare it to old Thrustmaster/CH products.
3. There's no room on my desk for it :(

I miss the old 2 button short yolk joysticks.
CHS products built a billion of them. Radio Shack used to carry
them too. I still am capable of playing flight sim and driving
games much more effeciently with those old simple joysticks. A
flight stick is just too much bulk to get the finite and precice
control needed for computer games. And, those PS2 style joysticks
are even worse.
I bugged a few good joystick makers lately to produce something like
this for the modern market, but they all said no. I think it would
be a great turn back to games that really were much more playable.
A simple 2 or 4 button short yolk joystick for USB. Much more easy
to hold and get fine, tight and precice control.

Force feedback is the dumbest idea ever in a joystick, IMO. Just
ruins your control.
However, there's several force feedback sticks from Saitek.
