Their codenames? R480 and R430! These new chips boast all the features of previous X800 offerings, only now with even more performance in the case of RADEON X850 XT PE (R480) and price/performance for R430. I switched from a Nvidia 6800 GT to an ATI x800 XT.
Although FPS can at times be a tad lower, it's more consisent. Also,
I noticed that the gameplay is smoother with the ATI even at lower
frames, while at lower frames the 6800 GT would stutter and jitter.
The other thing I noticed is when I crank up resolution, AA, and AF
there is almost no FPS loss with the ATI card where the Nvidia would
choke and run terribly.
Why is this?

As long as nVidia and ATi duke it out we will continue to get
better, faster cards from both vendors. Let's hope one company
doesn't buy out the other (voodoo, cough). Now all we need is for
Games not to be designed to run better on one brand than the other
but that's a whole different article to dive into.

Seems silly that you still use an Intel setup for your gaming
benches. AMD has been the way to go for gaming for a long time now.
PCIe is available now on AMD so there is no excuses left. Except for
the Intel kickbacks maybe ;)
From a recent CPU article here at FS:
The AMD Factor: Within the confines of Intel’s own product line, the
Pentium 4 570 is a respectable solution. However, when you consider
the AMD chips that it’s going against, gamers are much more likely
to go with AMD. We’re still waiting to see how Prescott performs
with 2MB of cache, especially at those higher clock speeds. Until
then, AMD largely goes unchallenged in gaming environments.
