 Tiger Woods Out...Until August!

| | (Post a comment) » EA an acquisition target? The big fish in the little pond has caught the eyes of Cthulhu. GI.biz reports how Rupert Murdoch is coming up from down under to 'kick the tires' of some gaming companies.
Speaking at a US investment conference, Peter Chernin admitted that News Corp was "kicking the tires of pretty much all video games companies" - up to and including market leader Electronic Arts.
"We see [games] as a big business and would like to get into it," Chernin told the conference, according to a report in today's Financial Times.
"We are struggling with the gap between companies like Electronic Arts, which come with a high price tag, and the next tier of companies," he explained. "These may be too focused on one or two product lines." | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

This would explain some of EA's aggresive moves recently (the Ubi
deal, NFL deal and looking at the NBA/MLB, putting pressure on
DICE). It was noted in one of the NFL reports that EA could be
bulking up for a takeover bid. EA could be making moves to inflate
their value before being bought out OR doing this to prevent a buy
out.
It will be interesting to see where this leads. Maybe MS, Nintendo,
or Sony will get in on the deal. MS could buy EA with cash (or Bill
Gates could do it with his own money!), and Nintendo has ~7B in cash
alone in the bank and possibly other assets.

I'm guessing Fox Interactive never took off. Though with 20
variations on "Die Hard: The Game", I'm not surprised. IMO
might be better to start from scratch again. Buying out EA carries
too much excess baggage like slave workers and a horrid track record
of games.

And the end result is photo-realistic games with commercials whose
gameplay is indistinguishable from watching prime time TV.
Oh, well. We still have FreeCell.

I doubt EA would get "kicked in the ass" if they were
bought. Usually management of big companies have a ton of cheap
stock options. They'd all be laughing all the way to the bank with
their new millions if they were bought in an hostile takeover which
would probably see other media giant bid on EA as well making the
price of the shares rise through the rough. And even if only FOX
(or newscorp) remained the sole interested party in this, they'D
still offer a sweet deal for the existing shares that are
circulating. Management still laughs all the way to the bank.
