 Tiger Woods Out...Until August!

| | (Post a comment) » Hearts of Iron 2 ReviewParadox Entertainment has been making real-time strategy games that are based around true strategy, rather than mere tactics or zergling hordes. Different, unique, often misunderstood and without exception buggy, they've found a niche market. Hearts of Iron 2 is not in that niche. It is different and unique, but it's the best World War II strategy game ever, and it certainly isn't buggy (though not perfect). It melds strategic and tactical depth with history and the realistic limitations of the nations involved - as they starve for resources, rush desperately along varying paths in the technology tables and desperately try to avoid losing armies to encirclements as they watch their manpower drop day by day. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Nice review, Jakub. Sorry it took me so long to get to reading
it...
Anyway, I'm not as enthusiastic as you are. It's not just the over
familiarity of the material, though that's part of it. And it's not
just the fact that whole thing is way too easy, though that's also
an issue.
I wonder if I am finally bored of Paradox games. Europa Universalis
is my all time favorite game, and I liked much of Crusader Kings,
but despite my love of Grand Strategy I find it hard to get excited
about their games and public pronouncements.

Ok this game is not for the faint of heart, lucky i found someone
who would get it off me so was only out $5 from store price :P
1. You spend good part of a day learning the game.
2. It gets VERY mundane. You can spend a hour just doing one stupid
thing over and over.
3. To many details to fool with in game, it needs a way to
micromanage the feel of game.
This game is great I suppose to hardcore players, but its not for
just anyone. You can tell a game is not meant for you when you
start bobbing your head up and down trying not to fall asleep. :P

I am sorry but the crash to desktop bug basically kills multiplayer
coop play so bad I just want to scream. Further, if you hit the
forums plenty of people have issues playing this game with large
wide of routers, more than other games I would say, yet the
developer been avoiding this issue same as the crashing bug.

Only 3 weeks late on this review. I suppose thats still better than
foregoing a review for Tribes Vengeance, which FS called "the
best multiplayer shooter we've seen" and was released almost 4
months ago.
Bang up job.

Hearts of Iron 2 is simply fantastic. Having conquered the world
from Europa Universalis to Hearts of Iron, I stil have not had
enough of Paradox's wargaming creations. The graphics and music
scores in HOI2 have certainly improved tremendously and not to
mention the greatly enhanced diplomacy, research, and production
modules plus upgrades to historical events have given the game a
much more exciting playability even for season wargamers like
myself. Believe it or not, I was so engrossed with the game that it
took me 3.5 months to conquer 7 countries :) Bravo HOI2!!

-Is this turn based or RTS?
-This game isn't political is it?
After reading a game review, and one has questions about basic
gameplay, I don't think it's fair to give merit to said game
review.
Jakob, your game reviews have become stingy over the past year.
You're not giving enough attention to detail. For instance:
"Manpower, more than oil, rare minerals and supplies, limits
your nation's ability to fight in the long run. It replenishes very
slowly - 1.35 manpower per day was the best I got from my German
campaign. Considering that two dozen infantry divisions, and a dozen
armored divisions, plus brigades, will spend roughly a year's worth
of manpower, it's vital to be careful - and makes the loss of entire
armies due to encirclements (like what happened to Germany's 6th
Army in Stalingrad) absolutely devastating."
Jakob, in these 3 sentences, you're assuming that the reader has
already played the original HOI - and possibly, to some extent, HOI
2. It's a big mistake, especially for reviewers, to become lazy and
not explain the mechanics of a game. It's an even bigger mistake to
write a line that would require the player to have "been
there" to understand what you're trying to write. I find myself
questionning why Manpower shortage more important than a shortage of
oil or rare minerals or supplies; how it's such a vital component
"in the long run" (numerical military strength is
irrelevant when you don't compare it to anything!); how you overcame
the problem (or what you can do differently to avoid the problem).
Good reviews should be vicarious to the reader. And while picking
apart one paragraph in a

This game is wonderful. Most other Paradox became this good after
years of patching. I cannot dream about how good this game will be
after a couple of patches. The demo doesn't really do the game
justice. Just take my word for it and go buy the game.
