I think developers lose sight of the big picture. Carmack and his
gang I'm sure, had a great story board, on which they built their
title. However, over time, technological snags and innovations
completely hi-jacked the spotlight in the studio and people stopped
stepping back and saying, "Yeah, but is it a good game??"
I think they all got so fascinated with the tech that the very
flavor of the game long-since went by the wayside and thus, we have
this mediocre game. *shrug*
They could've done a lot in the process to make a game that not only
made us wet our pants in terror, but left us feeling like we needed
to lie down and rest for a few after every session of playing it.
They really need people to do quality control at various stages to
maintain that level of "holy crap, they're gonna love
it!".
It's easy for us, however, to throw on our Tom Brady jersies come
Monday morning and say "how we would've done it".

Random Fact, "I can honestly say I enjoyed the expansion more
than the original, though it's difficult to pinpoint exactly
why."
Two words: Lower expectations.

D3 and HL2 impressed me for all of a few hours each. HL2 somewhat
longer, thanks to the much greater variety in maps and vehicles.
But in the end I don't care if I ever play or see either again.
Not so with the original Quake. Not so with Q2. I'm still tempted
to take them out occasionally, if only to rediscover how all my DM
skillz have gone to rust. ;-)
It's not they're intrinsically *better*, although certain aspects
are, arguably. What counts is that they blazed trails that have
long since been beaten into the ground. Classic black and white
movies are still revered for similar reasons. Hell, walk into any
museum...
Now I wait for what is probably the last FPS I'll ever buy: STALKER.
I'm beyond caring about linear run-and-gun FPS play; @!$%, you'd
have to *pay* me to play 95% of the dull, derivative slop out there.
If STALKER is successful in combining the nonlinear aspects of,
say, the GTA series with the grit of its Quake ancestry (while
adding the stunning dystopian vision of the novel Roadside Picnic),
then I'll be happy. If not, well, as Bogie said at the end of
Casablanca, "We'll always have DM4." ;-)
