In addition, the chip no longer requires a pass-through cable, supports both PCI and PCI-E interfaces, features a new remote control unit, and most importantly of all, has a built-in MPEG-2 encoder. But what separates ATI's TV WONDER ELITE from other THEATER 550 PRO-based cards? In this article, we've rounded up THEATER 550 PRO boards from ATI, Sapphire, and TUL. See how THEATER 550 PRO looks in comparison to THEATER 200 when capturing TV programming as well as how the cards fare against one another in this article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

yeah, depends on the software though....I've been using WinDVR 3,
but it doesn't support the audio from the tuner, so you have to use
line input

You should be able to no problem. There should be close to no delay
at all since it shouldn't be using the encoder chip to play live TV.
The signal from the video-in should simply be passed across the PCI
bus to you video card which will then overlay the picture directly
in memory. The whole process should be pretty fast. I've been
doing it with various consoles that way for years. However, if you
ever want to record your videogame play, there might be some delay
this point the mpeg2 encoder comes into play. It might depend on
the video capture application involved and whether it shows the
encoded mpeg2 file or whether it continues to show you the overlayed
signal when recording. Most of the applications I've dealt with in
the past including ATI's old MMC capture utility continue to show
you the overlaid signal when recording so there was no problem with
delay. I've never tried the Theater 550s software though.

Anyone know if i can hook up a console like a ps2 to this tuner and
play games? Or does the hardware encoding create too much of a time
delay that it makes playing consoles impossible? If this is true,
what is the best solution for this? I would like to play consoles on
my computer. Thanks.

TV out functionality? None, very few tv cards have TV out like the
Hauppauge pvr350. There are some separate decoder cards (no tuner)
like the Xcard that does TV out, but TV out is usually provided by
your own video card.

How's the TV-Out functionality? I haven't seen TV-Out support worth
thinking about on any graphics card in the past several years.
Those Connexant chips suck. So, while viewing TV on your monitor
may look better, using your PC to output to a (non-HDTV) TV still
blows chunks. :(
