| | (Post a comment) » AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Processor PreviewAfter launching their server and workstation-oriented dual-core Opteron processors last month, today AMD is allowing the press to release benchmarks on their dual-core desktop "X2" Athlon 64 processors, which will be available starting in June. See how the new processor stacks up to the latest single and dual-core processors from both AMD and Intel, as well as overclocking results with our Athlon 64 X2 4800+ chip inside! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Definetly need more multi-tasking based tests like other reviews
have done to show the real power in dual cores.
The aren't really much faster than single cores in single threads,
but when more threads arrive, they don't slow down--that's how
they're fast. Similar to driving around a racetrack, if you don't
need to slow down to take a corner like other cars, you can beat a
car that has much higher power but dismal handling. So it's a matter
of how many threads do you run, to make use of the extra resource.
For me, running photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, firefox, and an
mp3 player is pretty normal for work. I can certainly make use of
dual core processors, and know that dual cpu macs often perform much
smoother in operation than singe cpu pcs.
Of course, brute force tests like encoding favor dual cores nicely
as well, which makes the whole review a little one-sided.

These are largely server / workstation cpus. I'm not sure why you
would use monolithic single threaded applications such as games to
benchmark them. Please run something else to test high end cpus
like this; particularly for dual core ones.
Memory performance is surprisingly poor too -- not to say that it
doesn't seem like a fast cpu -- just not what it was hyped up to
be.
The future's definitely in dual cores though.

I think you forgot to actually read the review or look at
benchmarks. The real world performance increase is pretty clear in
my book. In fact, the 4000+ and the 4400+ that I would have bought
are not priced all that dissimilarly. Also, in many areas, the
performance is the dual core is significantly better. I would love
to be able to have multiple things running in the background while a
game. Even outside of gaming, I often have my CPU stressed.

I really don't understand the removal of resolutions below 1024. It
effectively makes a few tests entirely worthless due to video card
limitations. When you're doing game cpu tests the point isn't to run
them at realistic graphics settings, it's to test which cpu is best
in that game. You can't do that if the vid card is causing a
bottleneck.

Why would you pay a premium for something you most likely will not
gain any sort of real world performance enhancement until your next
upgrade cycle?
Applications follow the hardware available so you would not see many
applications until after it has been available for awhile.

I was hoping that I could incorporate dual-core into my next
upgrade, sometime in late summer. That's beginning to look unlikely
if availability for OEMs is late Q3 at the earliest. %&%# it. Now
I have to gigure out whether to hold off or pick up a 3800-4000+ and
do the dual core thing a few years from now. I hate how these
things drag on sometimes.

Yeah, just in time for new sockets from Intel and AMD. Who buys
processors in the $500-$1000 range (with the exception of
professionals where time is money, and they can justify the high
end)?
CPU articles used to be interesting, but the last year or so has
just been a complete snoozer. I suppose I should be thankful that
I'm not constantly buying CPUs anymore.
