 Tiger Woods Out...Until August!

| | (Post a comment) » Sony/Toshiba: Unification has failedAccording to sources at Toshiba, Sony, and Matsushita, talks on rallying around one format for next-generation DVDs has failed, however, all the parties involved did say talks would nonetheless continue (for now).
Sony and Toshiba updated the status of unification talks during both meetings, according to attendees. Kiyoshi Nishitani, Sony's senior vice president, acknowledged that the three companies had failed to reach an agreement, according to a Sony spokesman.
Both Sony and Toshiba executives said the talks would continue, but downplayed the prospects that the three consumer electronics giants could reach a consensus on a unified format.
The HD DVD group said it will stick to its schedule for introducing HD DVD products later this year.

I think most industrial leaders in entertainment business are pretty
comfortable with a touchable distribution media. They won't jump
onto internet channels anytime soon. What they may offer is some
really time-related info like: news, unpopular shows, maybe
political programs. :)
The idea of DVDs is not bad at all, nor is the idea of next-gen DVD.
The market will tell who will be the winner. Maybe the market will
split according to the regions.

HD-DVD... Blu-Ray... Beta... VHS... CD... DVD...
It's about inevitable here isn't it? I mean... there must be a
winner, and there must be the loser.
Those who have ignorantly said "Sony will eventually fail"
or those who say, "Always be a need for WORM"... well you
MAY be right, who knows, but Sony isn't failing soon that I can
assure you, and WORM is a waste of time if you decide you'd like to
change a file you created by mistake...
The fact is, that external independent discs are a waste of effort.
Why?
#1 - Discs break
#2 - Discs Scratch
#3 - Discs ARE HUGE!
#4 - Discs are Inconventient
#5 - Discs cost money for the distribution mechanism
#6 - Discs are slow
Argue how you will, but all of the above is true. I'm lucky enough
to have Ultra-Broadband and I can tell you, I don't wast the time to
go to a store if I want to rent a video. And if I want to watch a
TV show I wasn't around for, I grab that from the net too. How long
does it take me to pull in a TV show of 350mb? Around 7-10
minutes.
There used to be a Sun commercial... The Network is the computer,
that is so true. The internet was just the beginning, connectivity
will rule the day in the end. Direct distribution may be the
ultimate delivery mechanism.
The end-all? Multiple Large fully redundant disc arrays with
Petabytes of storage. Located in POPs across the world and mirrored
for content. Think Google... Just instead of 2GB for email, we'll
get 2TB for ANYTHING we like. We'll have access wherever we are.
Virtual computing (Think VNC, Or Terminal services) will allow
people to connect to these large repositories and resume thei

You have some very valid points but you fail to realize there will
always be a reason and a market for WORM devices.

I think it doesn't matter what Sony / Toshiba do. Hollywood will
decide which format they want to release their movies on and that
format will win.

Personally I'm putting my money on Sony's Blu-Ray, for two maon
reasons: I think its the better one in terms of storage and its
other advantages. Also, Xbox isn't HD-DVD, so Microsoft isn't
exactly backing HD-DVD as much as they once did. The PS3 is going
to be huge and without Xbox 360's help to sell the HD-DVD format its
not going to get far. No offense, but its not likw the Revolution
will be the big seller for the format. Its really too bad they
can't make a compromise, it would probably increase HD audio/visual
sales.

I have a better idea. Why don't we skip DVD altogether. No joke.
The more I think about it, (besides their movie selling business
which arguably current DVD standards are sufficent), why do we need
DVD. Storage, Backup, Software distribution.
Well, guess what? The best way to get the data you need is via the
internet and broadband. Don't you think speed and access will
improve? Asian broadbanders pay only about $15 (adjusted USD).
Say what you will of "piracy" but piracy is when you SELL
others work as your own not just share it. Sharing will grow.
My main point is, now already and not just hype, you can buy a tiny
2.5" (yes Inch) 40GB (That's billion and just to start) USB or
Firewire external storage Hard drive. Now get this, the drive itself
has video out and plays Divx (& HDTV) movies right to your big
screen.
Hello! Do you know what this means? We don't need no stinkin' new
DVD formats with thier enevitable lock-in road blocks. We decide as
newer and better formats/codecs are developed what form and size our
data needs. Imagine the forth coming 400GB 2 inch external storage
with video out.
All this fits in your pants pocket. It's your backup. It's your
install media. It's faster to utilize, faster and rewritable and you
can't scratch the darn thing. In fact their making external drive
more and more durable. The shiny disc is getting old. Why don't they
try for a crytal or something inovative at least. Not just more of
the same and version two.
Also, what if this drive WAS your main computer drive? What if you
had several.
Why again do we need to mess with the extream time wasting processes
of

I hope it ends up in a state similar to DVD+/-R; while I definitely
think Blu-Ray is the superior technology, I don't want to see
Nintendo get crushed because they use HD-DVD in the Revolution while
the PS3 uses Blu-Ray.

The Empire and the Rebels could not sign a treaty, not surprising,
considering their considerable ego.
