A Shanghai online gamer has been given a suspended death sentence for killing a fellow gamer.
Qui Chengwei stabbed Zhu Caoyuan in the chest when he found out he had sold his virtual sword for 7,200 Yuan (£473).
The sword, which Mr Qui had lent to Mr Zhu, was won in the popular online game Legend of Mir 3.
Attempts to take the dispute to the police failed because there is currently no law in China to protect virtual property. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Agree here. Still people have been killed over expensive sneakers,
dog disputes, road rage incidents, etc Unfortunately the world is
full of angry people.
The victim's morals are irrelevant here - of course he had no right
to sell something that he didnt own and maybe the gaming community
should come up with some rules about lending and cheating (and why
not, buying).
The murderer's motive is also irrelevant - he committed murder, and
that is all. He should reap the consequences.
Games are not to blamed. Virtual reality is not only confined in the
gaming field, it's in the internet, the various blogs, music sites,
emailing, tv etc Rights of ownership should apply to a virtual sword
and any virtual commodity -not superceding of course the provider's
rights. After all, gamers spend hours on perfecting what they do and
they need real money to fund their activities - thus they should
have 'rights of ownership' on their scores, profiles, weapons and
what else they earn by their activities.
My question is about the buyer of the sword. Wasn't there any way
for him to verify who the real owner of the sabre was? Shouldnt
there be an archive of a short? And is hir/her character still
active now?

Again, I fail to see why it's so bad to buy a virtual sword? with
real cash...
Is it diffrent than buying music? Emoticons? Anything displayed on
your computer/TV/played in stereo?
Is it diffrent than buying firecrackers and enjoying them? A part
for your car?
No, it's not, it's something that someone wanted, and payed for it.
Any of the things mentioned above, if you went through lots of
trouble to acquire it, or sold it for a big ammount of money, and
then there's a murder involved, there is still no diffrence.
The rules of supply and demand can be applied to anything, even
virtual.

who cares if it's murder/manslaughter/accident or how people die
because of a MMORPG? Does it make any difference? People died over
a video game.
Get a clue? I think some people here needs to get a clue. The
MMORPG group as a whole is designed from the very start to be an
mental addiction. That's how the game designers for these game make
their buck -- make people play endlessly and keep paying. These
games are mental masterbation.
Fact: 10% of the population suffer from depression, 1% of the have
schizophrenia, 1% bipolar disorder... addictive MMORPGS are perfect
for f'k themselves up.

Yeah, MMO's are so bad because someone died. Despite the fact that
it's the first death ever recorded that was caused by an MMO. How
long have they been out, eight years? One death in eight years?
One person dies from getting hit by a blimp every year. Blimps kill
eight times as many people as MMOs, Oh no, blimps are evil! I'm
gonna start the ABC, the Anti Blimp Committee! Down with blimps!

I guess they both got what they deserve. That f'n prick that sold
something that was no his to sell (even if it was a virtual item),
and the guy who killed him is charged for murder.
I still believe that the guy who sold something that was not his is
a total a$$h@le, i personally would beat the crap out of him and
trashed his virtual character, killing him was a bit much though.
