| | (Post a comment) » World War II Online: Beginner's Flying GuideSo Jakub finally convinced you to try World War II Online, and against all expectations you've found you like it - but there's those dang aircraft overhead. They always strafe and bomb you when you're on the ground, but you can't even figure out how to take off. Hop in this here guide to learn at least that much, as well as each ride's strengths and weaknesses. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

This is one of the weirder threads I have seen in awhile, I
especially like 'anonymous' posters that probably are not real
pilots either.
I have almost every flight sim out there and enjoy IL-2 (Falcon 4.0
stillmy favorite but due to personal experience with them), but
would never put the gameplay above WWIIOL. I also have played
almost every Massive Multiplayer out there including Guild Wars.
Each game has it's inherent plus and minus features that most
players have to decide if that 'one' problem drives them away from
the game. Classifying WWIIOL as only a flight sim would be anyone's
first mistake (not that the reviewer does), since there are dozens
of different personas to field in the game. Flying though has
changed alot in the year I have been playing. I like the damage
model described by Doc and have problems with a few aspects like any
other gamer, but the flight models online are some of the best if
not the best of the online market. BTW: Yes I have flown planes,
including modern fighters.
I truly believe that WWIIOL has the best gameplay in the market
today. Does it cater to the addicted patterned thumb exercisers
(PS2, Xbox, etc..) or the repeative spawn quake-like gamers. Not
completely, but does include the 'I like to Die Alot' players in
their mix.
It took alittle longer for me to come and enjoy WWIIOL as much as I
do now, but that is because I learned I was not playing with all of
its strategy in mind. I really think 2-weeks is not long enough to
try the game.
I hope people try WWIOL (more for me to kill), but also hope they
try and learn about 'how' to play the game with others to experience
the depth of its

Absolutely! It's to often you have that happen - posting to a forum
is a proactive approach by developers, instead of the site persuing
an interview.
Quite a compliment to the site

Awesome, I like how we have the actual developers at CRS posting
here too, revealing more details.

The IL2 dweebs are at it again. I wouldn't call IL2s flight model
better, it's just different. Especially I wouldn't call attention to
dive acceleration when bashing ww2ol in comparison to IL2, where
dive/zoom and power are very poorly modeled.
Nice guide, it is not easy to write a good one. Once you are
knowledgeable enough to write one, you can't relate to newbie
problems that good anymore, and the whole thing is just so complex
that it is difficult to write a guide without writing a book.

Hi, I read your article which I would like to say was an excellent
piece. The small team here at CRS would like to thank you for your
support ! There were a couple of things I wanted to address and I
include a copy of my posted response aimed at these small details I
thought you might like some feedback on.
Again, many thanks !
-Doc.

As a producer responsible for the content and functionality of
the games vehicle systems, I would like to point out that control
surfaces can be damaged, decreasing control authority and
increasing drag on that section of the airframe (which can cause
wonky flight characteristics and lack of control, in addition to
reduced top speeds) ... control surfaces and wings and
stabilizers (vertical and horizontal) can also be blown off,
including damage to flaps and landing gear. Guns can be disabled,
propellors and drive gearboxes (governors) disabled and fuel and
ammunition flamed up or exploded.
These features are only available as a result of battle damage
however, stress damage from over manoeuvring is not currently
modeled but is planned for the future.
While it is fair to state in your OPINION that these kinds of
battle damage features do not happen "frequently
enough" it would be wise to keep in mind that this is your
opinion only, you do not know in any factual sense if in real
life you would have seen more or less frequent instances per
sortie of these kinds of combat outcomes.
We record damage from individual rounds damaging individual
componenets, if they are not hit then you just ventilated the
skin of the aircraft, if damage components

We record damage from individual rounds damaging individual

of the aircraft, if damage components are not struck with sufficient
damage to destroy them then they will result in only partial damage
rather than catastrophic destruction and partial damage is sometimes
not realised by the pilot to be happening to the extent that their
aircraft is actually suffering compared to an undamaged aircraft.
For example, I asked a pilot I had survived a fight with as pick up
wingamn, why he was flyi

As far as Guild Wars go, I like it, but don't love it. Sometimes
the skills are not well explained, and I don't know what they do
(Arcane Mimicery anyone??? Becomes the elite spell of target ally,
what does that mean?)
One of the problems with this MMORPG is that all you do is fight.
You go to a town, with stuff, sell to merchants, get armor at an
armor guy, and then fight. It gets tiring cause LVL's matter a
little bit. Once you reach the max level of 20, what do you do next?
You just try to uncover map area that you haven't uncovered yet.
Something's missing from the game, and I don't know what.
