| | (Post a comment) » Sapphire RADEON X800 XL 512MB ReviewWith X850 XT dual-slot copper cooling, dual DVI, and VIVO, Sapphire's RADEON X800 XL 512MB is loaded with features. In today's article, we've put this board through its paces against the latest high-end cards at high resolutions in order to see if the extra memory really helps. Over the course of our testing we found a few cases where the 512MB board outperformed its 256MB predecessor, in addition to one app that actually takes advantage of the additional memory: F.E.A.R. beta. | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

you guys seem to want everything perfect as long as a game isn't
jerky i'm not fussed. You will get hard drive access on any game at
some point even if you have 2GB's of RAM its just the way pc's are
designed, just play the game man.

It's called marketing... They start with 256MB, then when lots of
people bought it, they open up with 512 to grab those who didn't buy
the other one, and some of those who did. That way, they get more
money.
Just like when they do a car, and then a year or 2 after, make it
convertible... It's a refresh that brings in new clients.

Was BF2 tested with video settings all at "High"? The High
Texture setting in particular seems to cause choppiness that may or
may not be reflected in FPS. Unsurprisingly this can be solved with
sufficient system RAM to avoid HDD paging. However the question is
whether textures will be loaded into VRAM if there is enough
(presumably with such 512MB cards) to achieve the best performance
possible or if it always just loads into system RAM.

I beg to differ on the 128 to 64.
Most of my games were chop central on my 64 meg card, when I went to
128 it made a big difference in the chop and I only run 1024X768
tops.

Because they can get higher margins on slower RAM for the slower
card, and they couldn't sell you the Ultra version of the GTX with
512MB a few months from now for $800.

ATI sucks because nVidia has had the faster card for the last month
or so? Right... try to remember when you loved ATI 3 months ago
because they were top-dog for single cards.

i don't understand why don't they put 512mb on to a gfx card that
would actually take advantage of the memory like a 7800gtx?
