But are they enough to dethrone NVIDIA's GeForce 7800 GT and 7800 GTX? Find out in our latest article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

No one can ever win a competition which never ends! Something we
should be grateful for.

ATI does not have an upperhand, because they don't have the product
to market yet. For the money, I would much rather buy the GTX which
has been a solid leader in all cases and already in SLI form too.
Well, as the saying goes "talk is cheap" and ATI has shown
a good contender, but until it is actually competing inside gamers
cases...then these reviews are just more talk.
I have a 6800GT AGP and I was waiting to see what ATI had to offer
to consider moving to PCI-E for my next system. But it is an obvious
decision. A product that costs less and is actually available or a
ghost card that sounds like it might be pretty good? Well, I'm not a
ghost chaser.
But I do agree, that by the time ATI gets there act together, nVidia
will already be in position to stomp them AGAIN with either an
updated, as some have suggested "ULTRA" version of the GTX
or a different card altogether.
Recommendation: Save your pennies-buy a GTX or if you are actually
willing to wait, then wait for the nVidia Ghost Buster.

Looks like ATI has the lead for now. But only on the media test
boards that come with 512MB of ram. But the question is, how many
boards will be available with 512MB and how much will they cost?
Secondly, taking the lifespan of todays modern technology, which to
my opinion is between 4-6 months, by the time these new XL cards hit
the market, Nvidia will probably be three quarters of the way in
process to deliver a newer card. Ultimately ATI will have the upper
hand but not much of an upperhand and not for a very long time. But
the true victory is still in Nvidia's side. ATI good attemp, but a
bit too late.

I'm more intrested in the x1600 series. If that's a let down too
though I'm just going to go with a 6800 GT or X800XL as the prices
have come down considerably. If there were 6800GT cards with vivo
avaliable at the moment that is what I would most likely go for as I
don't think a 6600GT will be enough. I'm sure NVidia will launch a
7600 as soon as 6800 and 6600 inventories go down.

I'm a bid fan of nVidia, so when I heard their new driver 81.84 said
it would give better performance to dual-core processors (I have a
X2)I was excited. But its not true, i have seen no performance in
any games. It's just another driver, big let down.

It does seem as if the only performance gains come from the fact
that x1800 has 512MB of RAM instead of only 256. Plus it obviously
has at least a little more memory bandwith than the 7800 GTX. Maybe
these issues come from the new manufacturing process. It seems that
every company is having trouble making .09 micron part perform like
they want. First Intel, then IBM, then AMD, and now ATI. Hopefully
the move to .065 will be smoother.
Just one other point. Does anyone else think it's a little
interesting that Valve releases it's HDR capable stuff that has
128-bit support just before ATI anounces a product that supports it?

right now this new lineup is underperforming as if the cards were
broken, its too bad this wont be as big as the 9700 pro launch,
which was the moment people knew to upgrade
im surprised we havent heard much from ati on the performance of the
cards because right now these cards are only for apple cinema users
and with a new quake coming out, there will be a lot of news in
hardware.

i dont think that $150-200 card will do well, what if the system is
a couple years old too, doesnt that mean it will hold back the new
card
if that is true, it might be the way to go
i dont think people should upgrade with new games of this scale
until the hardware gets better

I've separated the X1600, X1300 results from the X1800 stuff. I
knew
you guys would complain if I ran tests with an FX-57 system, so I
setup another rig with a 3500+, nF4 Ultra and completely different
graphics settings. I'm wrapping up those tests now.
where is this other reivew!
