» Day of Defeat: Source Review

Day of Defeat: Source. $20, 4 maps, HDR lighting, fast gameplay... but very closely based on a free mod. How to decide? Jakub's got his thoughts, as well as 99 yummy screenshots full of blood and gore and LMG camping.

In Valve's defence, they are activley supporting their games
themselves, fixing bugs, adding new features and they encourage
player feedback.

Valve are trying to do something new with the Steam network,
something that no one else has other done, (that I am aware of.)It's
a software distribution platform. You can download all their games
through Steam, including the originals, no need to have them on
disc. You can also download 3rd party games and mods, some are free,
others you have to pay for. Updates, bug fixes, new maps, forums,
technical support, news on up and coming features, it's all there,
all centralized, easy to access, easy to use.

You are not paying 20 bucks for an incomplete game that's just going
to left out in the widerness to die. Valve aren't taking your money,
laughing in your face and running away.

Their games are on-going projects, they keep adding and improving
them all the time.

If you think asking 20 bucks for it is a con, fine, don't buy it,
no-one is forcing you. But I must admit, I am surprised by the
amount of people who seem to almost take personal offense to this
asking price and who are trashing this game like crazy, even though
they appear to have never played it as they think it's incomplete
and a rip-off!

There's a free DOD:S weekend, July 7-8, log on, download it, play
it.

You can't bunny hop in DOD:S, jumping affects your sprint level, the
more you jump the more tired you become and the less height each
jump will have, also it's impossible to shoot while jumping.

This game stinks in my opinion.. It's a waste of money, it's
glitchey, and, well, what more can I say.. Don't buy it, it's a
waste of your money! Buy Half Life or somthing... Way better....

DoD:S has been a failure. There are fewer people playing DoD:S than
the original DoD. There are roughly 3-5k people playing the
original... pathetic. Flash graphics and a high price aren't going
to make people buy it.

I think Valve is gonna wait it out, hoping that people will buy it
as the time goes on because they think the HL2 engine games will
live as long as the HL1 games.

The HL1 mods lived/live so long because they were free. Now Valve is
charging for something that was free, few will bite.

Gameplay is more powerful than graphics and since the original
non-source versions provide the same thing, there is no need to buy
the new versions.

That's an old problem in HL2mp. You should be able to push a player
when you run into them, but for some reason it doesn't work.

"Rifles enjoy the ability to fire rifle grenades, adding a
great deal of distance to the nade and being able to kill pesky
machine gunners and snipers by bouncing shots off walls"

Were rifle grenade-launchers available in WWII?

Yeah, i hate the blockers and getting stuck on objects.

Very fair review. I got the silver pack for HL2 so it seems free to
me. 4 maps does sukk but i have no doubts they will add more. They
have kept working on source, lost coast is about adding value after
they took my money so i have some reason for faith in valve.

I think the bottom line is do you want to play it after 30+ hrs? I
know im going back and it sounds like the reviewer is too. So its
not such a bad deal.

BTW i liked ghost recon for accuracy.

the one thing i hate most about DoD:S is that someone can stand in a
doorway to make it impossible to get by.

i think the sniper rifles are little bit too accurate. i have pin
point accuracy when i stand, crotch, or prone and i can move around
and still get the same accuracy.

Lets put this really simple. DoD:Source is a remake of the free DoD
HL1 mod. Its being sold uncompleted.

Who in there right mind buys a remake of a free mod that isn't
complete. If the original DoD never existed this would be laughed at
for being $20 bucks in its current state.
