Great article. I want to see more REALISTIC benchmarks. So what if
an FX-55 can outrun a A64-3000 at 800x600. Nobody plays at that
level. I would like to see benchmarks start at 1280x960 2XAA 4XAF.

RAM has very little to do with FPS, it has much more to do with load
times and stuttering. Hence, you do not notice the difference going
from 1 to 2GB because RAM does not really translate into FPS. You
could have tested 512mb and 2GB and achieved similar results. I
posted this article on Futuremark forums and people were stunned.
It is rather misleading.

There is a simple way of finding out if a game is CPU limited, and
to what extent. The way to do it is to run the game on a low GPU
quality and capture the frame rate. By limiting the GPU usage, to
below its capacity, one ends up pushing the CPU to its capacity. A
ratio is revealed.
This is also a good way of finding out how good the drivers are on
the PC side.

"What is the point of the test, which compared CPUs?"
would be a more correct question.
The answer would be; to find out what the best F.E.A.R CPU is. After
all that work, the conclusion was that it did not matter as much as
the GPU did.

This was the worst test ever!
Seriosly what is the point of a cpu shootout if you are being
bottlenecked by the gpu? And also with the ram test, what the hell
was that about? If you turn on AA you will run out of memory if you
have 1GB of system memory and will severly need that 2nd GB.

Well its quite obvious this game is more GPU intensive than
anything, so it would have been nice if you had done a review of,
lets say the 3500+ and the intel 3.8GHz 6xx along with a few dual
core processors with a few different video cards (for example x800XL
or 6800GT). Thats what I'd be interested in.

I don't know why this review stresses so much on the upgrades. This
is my system :
FEAR 1.1
P4 @ 2.8 Ghz (hyperthreaded)
1 GB RAM
Radeon 9800, 128 MB
System settings : custom (--> all max)
Graphic settings : custom (-- some max, some medium)
Basically, I did "auto-detect" and then max'd the
"shaders" setting manually and changes filtering to 2x
anistropic. And this works very nicely for me ! I'm really happy
with the speed and visuals.
What did I lose ?
Well, I set the graphics to MAX (still no FSAA) just to see how much
I lose visually but was glad that I didn't lose much at all visually
/ in ambience. My framerate was a slideshow at times and it looked
marginally good, if you were trying to find faults. During game play
it wouldn't matter, if this was 100% then my 'auto-detected'
settings were almost 90-95% there.
What made a difference ?
When I went to 2x FSAA the graphics took a significant upgrade and
the little tweaks (from 'auto-detect') mattered little. I'm sure 4x
FSAA would be better.
Bottomline:
Unless you can't live without FSAA, you should be set with a system
better than mine (listed up). BUY THE GAME ... I love the ambience
you play thru in the game. In terms of its immersiveness its as
convincing as half life 1 was (for its times, a few years back).
Artists have done a great job of creating this awesome world and the
programmers have done an awesome job making that work on older
systems well too.
hope that helps,
Doomguy

This is a really great game, I would probably even recomend it to
people who never play FPS. Just set it up for a gamepad and set it
to easy and enjoy.
There is one thing that drives me nuts. If you touch some box or
something the "Physics" engine deems it needs to ping pong
around the item making a lot of noise for hours. In a game where
the only way to see invisible enemies is to listen for sounds, this
is stupid.
Anyone know how to turn off the random item sound effects???? They
drive me nuts.
