Man if they make an Acid Arena type-mod to this game, %$!$#!@%
textures and consolephobia will fade away into probably the best
game ever. Imagine Acid Arena single player? Yeah thats going to be
a hundred dollar idea. If realistic rainbow demon clowns don't
imitate a shot of LSD, nothing will.

Let's use the engine for what it should be used and make Acid Arena
2Q4!!! (And don't HL2 the thing and make us pay for it!)

Gogamer.com has got the DVD edition of Quake 4 for $35! Except
you've only got until midnight of October 28, which is very soon.

bit of a lightweight review. what about:

MP lag, what sort of connection is decent, will our lightweight 256
connections work or is it a sh!tty doom 3 fest?

system requirements off the cuff, is it identical to doom 3 or did
they manage to clean things up somehow?

SP being good is no surprise, Raven's been churning out great SP FPS
for years. That MP isn't great shouldn't be too much of a downer, MP
wasn't great out-of-the-box in any Quake. Give it a few months and
the community will make this great. That's the way it's always been.

*** INCOMING RANT WARNING :p **

My complaints with the MP-portion of the game (I have barely tried
SP. It doesn't interest me):

- I can't really blame the game for my computer being out of date,
but it's still a bit disappointing when it doesn't run well enough
on my P4 3000 / Radeon 9800 / 1gig of RAM - to be satisfactory. Not
even with stuff cranked all the way down. Which makes the game look
uglier than Q3. FEAR runs much smoother, to name one game with
comparable graphics.

- It doesn't "feel" right (this is why people still prefer
CS over CS:Source). Yeah, it's a bit like Q3, but then again it's
not. I can't put my finger on it, exactly. My hope is it will be
fixed with osp for quake4 or something like that.

- The maps that are carried over from q3/q2 feel like slightly
downsized versions of the originals (the edge, the longest yard,
etc). Bad choice of engines for a multiplayer game? Oh, I know, it's
not a pure multiplayer game. In fact, I'd say the multiplayer
must've taken the backseat just like in doom3, which also sucked in
this regard. Still, at least they based it on something that was
good originally this time, so it's not close to being as
spectacularly craptastic as D3 MP.

- WHAT is wrong with the sound? Explosions, gunfire etc. is
EVERYWHERE... coming from EVERYWHERE... whether I use software or
OpenAL/EAX HD. I constantly get the impression gunfights are
on-freaking-top-of me, whether they are on my side of a wall or not.
In fact, it doesn't seem as if walls obstruct sound at all in MP.
And I have real diffuculty telling if someone shooting at me is
behind me, or in front of me, even when using headphones.

>I must say I miss the old days of the fun Q2 clans and OGL
ladder

matches, though...

Why do you miss them? There are still active Q2 servers. There are
even active Quake servers, in fact I still play Quake.
