| | (Post a comment) » 3D Performance with Quake 4: Part 2 Mainstream CardsAfter evaluating Quake 4's performance with a handful of high-end cards, today we're here to take a look at the cards in the mainstream price segment. This includes ATI offerings ranging from the RADEON X700 PRO all the way up to the X800 XL (including ATI's X1600 XT) as well as GeForce cards ranging from the GeForce 6600 GT up to the 6800 GT. In addition, we've also run high quality mode vs medium quality tests, 128MB vs 256MB video memory tests, as well as 256MB vs 512MB benches. See how these mainstream cards perform in this article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Hey Brandon,
Please rerum the benchmarks with a faster CPU. That way, you can
eliminate the effect of the CPU bottlenecks, especially with the
faster cards.

Hi Guys
Have really enjoyed these comparisons it helps purchasing decisions
considering this engine seems to have a bit of life left in it. I
was wondering if you could possibly host the demo file you have been
using for these comparisons so we are able to do direct comparisons
with our own machines?
thanks in advance

I totally agree with you. That part of this benchmark is a joke.

The image quality with the newer drivers does not look better. The
image is sharper and the lighting is properally rendered. With the
newer drivers the detail texturing on the floor looks less refined
and several shadows are now non-existent. This explains the
"performance gain". This is remarkably similar to the Q3
cheating years ago...

Compare 128MB, 256MB and 512MB videocards at Medium Quality was a
very bad idea, because MQ is for 128MB cards.
If you want to compare a 128MB and a 256MB card use a HQ mode and a
very long demo (all the way through a single player level).

Yes, I was surprised by that as well. Generally the 6800 pulls even
with the 6600 GT w/o AA/AF, and then pulls ahead once 4xAA is
cranked on, but in this case with Q4 it never really broke away from
the 6600 GT.
I'd still take the 6800 though...
