Its still bs. Christmas has been driven by the marketing departments
of companies as a way to part you from your savings.
Lets also look at human nature. You know you will get a pile of
cheap cr@p trinkets and you will only get something decent if you
buy it yourself. Why? Because everyone has a limited budget and you
can only part with about $500 if you spurge. Thats over quite a few
people. If you part with more you are stupid. You cannot buy love.
Your relationship with those family is the same whether or not you
get them an expensive present. If you get them something big you
train them to see you as $$$ to be manipulated.
So to get 1 decent thing in exchange for your outlay of $500 you
spend 200 on yourself and 300 on others at about 50 each. You know
you will be happy with your present because you bought it! You can
then focus on spending time with others which is the real value of
the holidays. You no longer care that they give you a bunch of cheap
cr@p. You love them for them and not their present.

Interesting that you panned the ipod shuffle. I have a black and
white screen 40GB ipod, a 1GB shuffle that I bought earlier this
year, and a 4GB nano that I bought on impulse because it was so $%&$
pretty. I use the shuffle far and away the most. The 40GB ipod I use
mainly when I'm on business trips. I used the nano a lot the first
month I had it but now I'm back to the shuffle for day-to-day use.
I love the size and I LOVE the fact that there is no cable involved.
Just plug it in and go. The lack of a screen doesn't bother me at
all, since I mainly play through entire albums or set playlists
anyway.
If you need a screen and small size, the nano is good since it isn't
that much bigger than the shuffle is. That said, not needing a cable
for charging and syncing is, imo, GREAT. I'm probably going to sell
my nano since I use the shuffle more, and it can't possibly replace
my ipod (with my 35GB library) for travel use.
