No mention of the San Diego 3700+/Opteron 148 ($235, 2GHz, 1MB)?
What about the dual-core Opteron 170 ($420 OEM, $460 BOX, 2GHz, 2 x
1MB)?
I also think a good budget board is the ECS KN1 series or the new
KA1 Crossfire board. What you get for ~$100 is a steal.

I've seen a site comparing 35 PSU, and the OCZ Mainstream which I
wanted to buy, has been one of the worst PSU on those 35. It look
very good but it's total crap. believe me...

Interesting you should mention it, I just upgraded from my GF4 Ti
4200 to a PCI-E 6600 GT and a 2Gb pack of Corsair XMS. Lay all that
on a SATA Raid0 array and BF2 runs like a dream and loads maps super
fast.
Good article.

I would go for the 3700+ San Diego for the 150-300$ CPU instead of
the 3800+. Just me though. :) Other then that, nice article.

Therein lies another problem with the X800 GTO, board partners are
cashing in on all the hoopla and producing cheaper GTO boards that
may or may not flash into X850 boards. Many of the 128MB GTO boards
for instance ship with only 350MHz memory modules, there are even
GTO boards out there with 128-bit memory interfaces!
The only GTO board you're going to be able to run with 4xAA are the
more expensive boards that are priced between $150-$200. I doubt
even a Sapphire Fireblade 128MB is going to run 4xAA with decent
frame rates. 128MB of memory just isn't enough frame buffer for 4xAA
especially at higher resolutions.
Don't get me wrong, the GTO is a good board. The article even states
that they're good short-term 6-12 month purchases.

The x800GTO 128MB's retail for around $130~$140 on various sites
around the net. Also a point I should have made before was that in
this price range its rather silly to consider SM3 support as a large
factor when you consider choosing between a x800GTO and 6600GT.
It seems rather ridiculous to limit yourself in games today like BF2
to 1024x768 & 2XAA (in comparison to possibly 1280x960 or higher
& 4xAA on x800GTO), just on some off chance that far in the
future there will be an SM3 game, that will probably still use SM2
for the gross majority of it's featureset, that will run @ 800x600
when you enable the SM3 featureset.
Also when I talked about the longevity of the card, I meant with
respect to the level of performance and value you get out of it in
games. Obviously people with 4200s are getting considerably less in
todays games than they did when they bought their 4200s. I was
simply stating that you'll be getting more out of games with the
X800GTO in comparison to the 6600GT a year from now and beyond.

Actually the X800 GTO falls in the $150-$300 range, not $0-$150.
Unless of course you're referring to the 128MB X800 GTO. The 128MB
boards are the only ones priced below $150.
I can't think of any upcoming titles that will take advantage of
2.0b shaders. Again, the only reason other games supported 2.0b in
the past is because of ATI's support. ATI literally added Chaos
Theory's 2.0b path themselves.
And in regards to your comments on the life cycle of the midrange
market, you'd be surprised how long GF4 Ti 4200 users held on to
their cards. There are still quite a few 9500/9600 users out there
too. Check out Valve's hardware survey for HL2.

The lack of SM3 support seems like a weak reason to not recommend
the X800/X800GTO over the 6600GT in the $0-$150 price range. This is
the value minded midrange market, no one is expecting their card to
last until the dawn of time, but either way an x800 will be of far
more use down the stretch than the 6600GT.
