| | (Post a comment) » Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955: 65-nm uncoveredIntel's first 65-nm processor is finally here and with it Intel is aiming to deliver more performance. The first CPU built on the new manufacturing process is the Pentium Extreme Edition 955. The new CPU is built on Intel's "Presler" core, sporting 2MB of L2 cache for each of the processor's 2 cores and runs at 3.46GHz with a 1,066MHz bus. Is the bigger cache enough to overtake AMD's Athlon 64 X2 4800+? Find out in today's article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

Um kay,
Even allowing for all the differences in configuration between the
articles just look at the benchmark to see if it makes sense.
The X2 4800 surpasses the 955 in every game except quake4 where it
just about ties an a64 4000 (both have 1mb of cache and a clockrate
of 2.4ghz). It's still just a guess, but since this patch is
supposed to add so much for dual core processors at lower
resolutions, I STILL do not think it was used for the X2.

The articles aren't directly comparable, one was using 1280x1024x32
4XAA and a Radeon X1800 XT, while the other 1024x768 4xAF with
Geforce 7800 GTX 256.

Anybody else notice they used the patched version of Quake 4 for the
955 but not the X2? What a difference a patch makes is right when
you don't use it for everyone. The X2 4800 getting <100fps at
10x7 is a farce. It got 160fps at 8x6 and 103 @ 12x10 with 4xAA in
the previous article. The real number is probably in the 140+ range
at 10x7 putting it at the top of the chart.
Would have been nice to have shown some power and temperature
comparisons since performance/watt and silent computing is becoming
more and more important.

So would that mean that Hyper Threading wouldn't function on Home
Edition? (The task manager in Pro sees the EE 955 as 4 processors
and regular P4's with HT as 2.)

All this proves is that it is the architecture introduced in
Prescott that drove up power consumption rather then just the 90nm
process itself, Presler does run 15%-20% cooler then Smithfield,
actually from what I recall at load the Presler at 3.4GHZ consumes
about as much as 2.8GHZ Smithfield at load so it's a step in the
right direction.
IF you want cool running processor from Intel on the desktop wait
for Conroe and Allendale.
