| | (Post a comment) » AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 ReviewWith dual-core gaining in popularity, AMD has taken their FX line in a new direction as their Athlon 64 FX-60 boasts 2 processor cores running at 2.6GHz, each with 1MB of L2 cache. Basically, AMD's integrated two FX-55 CPUs onto a single die. In today's review we've benchmarked the FX-60 against six other CPUs. See how the new chip fares against AMD's single-core and dual-core offerings, as well as the latest from Intel in this article! | Previous news article | Back to main news | Next news article |

"On the other hand, if you’re living for today’s games (a
majority of which are not threaded), then the extra stock frequency
is preferred."
Sorry, but this line is borderline idiotic. A mere 1 FPS in F.E.A.R,
or a few of them at HL2 are prefered to an entire extra core? A pure
statistical, invisible-to-the-user, irrelevant advantage is prefered
to improved performance in everyday use, smoothnes and potential
(quite relevant, when we are talking about a 1000$ component wich
happens to be the last one of it's kind until the socket upgrade) I
don't even have to mention the gains in Quake4 txs to the second
core (a scenario likely to repeat in short term with new games).
Gamer or power user and barring some obscure and bizarre
computational need for those extra 200 mhz, choosing a FX-57 over a
FX-60 is simply a huge mistake. Perhaps not an "Invading russia
in winter"-like mistake, but pretty close. Although I enjoy the
site, I can't understand the reluctance of the FS crew to dual core
CPUs...they may be the last group on the net to realice that single
core CPUs are the past (yes, even for gamers...)

The new socket matters because if you buy an FX60, you're stuck with
nowhere to upgrade. The current line of FX chips from AMD started
with the FX51, and has now ended with the FX60.
For example on the video side, I bought a BFG 6800 Ultra OC, which
is the fastest Nvidia AGP card out there. Little did I know it
would be the last Nvidia AGP product when I bought it, even though
PCI-E was coming out. Yes, I know ATI has a slightly faster AGP
card which is the king, but bla, I wanted the 7800 GTX in AGP.
Guess what, it doesn't exist. I have no way to upgrade my machine
for the 1 year GPU refresh.
#20, Agree. All these kids get the cheapest chip they can afford
and OC the heck out of it. Know what happens? You're heating up
your machine, it's unstable, and you can OC the FX60 to even higher
levels. So buy the fastest chip you can afford, because you
probably won't upgrade it in the future. When you buy the
latest/greatest and spend more money, you are future proofing your
investment.

I love the "smart" people who say, "buy cheaper and
then overclock it to the same speed...save money!!!". Here's
the catch...the FX 60 can overclock as well...no REALLY!!!. I know
it sounds amazing, but you can overclock an FX 60 too!!!
The FX is made for gamers because it overclocks better(in more ways)
than a regular chip...or maybe they just put "FX" on it to
make us think it was better, but not really...
So yea, ice cube your 3800 so it can squeeze all it can to get to
the DEFAULT speed of an FX 60(and still not be better)...because we
all know that the FX 60 just doesn't go any faster;)

I've never had a problem with my ATI products in terms of stability.
Even after I swapped the drivers for modded ones back and forth, it
still performed like a champ.

ATI is not the way to go for stability. Too many games encounter
lots of crashes due to their driver quality (or lack thereof). It's
too bad, because the hardware suffers because of the software.

WHO GIVES A RAT'S FURRY HINEY ABOUT A NEW SOCKET?!!?!?!?!?!
Seriously guys?! If I hear that one more time, I'm gonna...burn down
the firingsquad. ;-)
Tech progresses...the smartsumer buys the older tech, net's 90% of
the perfomance and saves a bundle! There's nothing wrong purchasing
the AMD X2 3800 or Opteron 165 right now. They've got the highest
perf to cash ratio and are PLENTY FAST enough to run the latest
games.

I gave it a 93%.
No, FS doesn't make their demos available, because they don't want
card makers to cheat.

Looks like a great processor. However, my X2 4400+ purchased back
in September, for $400 runs at 2.6GHz at default voltage on stock
cooling and will run quite stabily at 2.8 with some moderate voltage
increase. If people could achieve that kind of performance in the
car world, people would still by Ferraris just for the looks. In
the cpu world, however, you won't get any looks or girls buying an
Athlon FX so save yourself some wasted cash and go for the cheaper
4400.
