| | (Post a comment) » Notebooks surpass desktops in retail salesNotebooks are the hottest growing segment of the PC industry (not to mention that an increasing number of consumers are building their own PCs now), so this probably shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone:
Sales of notebooks surpassed desktop sales in the U.S. retail segment for the first time, according to a report from Current Analysis. Notebooks accounted for 50.9 percent of personal computers bought at retail in 2005, while desktops accounted for 49.1 percent. In 2004, notebooks accounted for only 43 percent of U.S. retail sales, while desktops accounted for 57 percent.
The United States only accounts for roughly 9 percent of the worldwide market, and retail figures exclude sales from large resellers to corporations or direct sales from companies like Dell. Still, retail is an important segment, and overall notebook sales are rising, too. Richard Shim, an analyst at IDC, predicted that overall notebook sales in the U.S. will surpass desktop sales by late 2007. Until recently, the research firm thought that notebook sales would not pass those of desktops until 2008.

so?
It'll play FEAR 1024x768. Fine for me.
And at 30,000 feet.
And at the hotel.
And round at my mates.
And it fits in a small bag.
My desktop can't do FEAR at silly res because I have a life and
refuse to spend that sort of money. So why not buy a reasonable
laptop instead. Far more flexible.

My laptop has a dvi port so whats stopping me turning it into a
desktop when im at home? I too have a 19" monitor at home (and
a logitech G15 kb)
Its portable, has an a64 3400, x700, 60gb 7200 drive. I can take it
on the train when commuting, on the plane and plug it in at the
other side.
Can't do that with my base unit. Sure it might not be AS fast as an
equivalent base unit but not by an amount that normal people
seriously care about.
Desktops are fairly useless to me. I'm surprised that there arent
many super small form factr PCs (aka laptops minus screens) being
mass sold.

the point is 'mr laptop' that you're stuck with your 17"
monitor, whereas i can buy a 21", then switch to a 17" tft
with better refresh rate and then dump it for a 19" CRT.
otherwise known as 'choice'

You know I was just thinking about this and it just hit me. Nvidia
or ATI could make some kind of standard port (which I think they
both actually have done) and have an external box with the GPU.
When you don't need it don't plug it in and you save space and
battery power by using the onboard mb graphics. I think a sorta
clunky external box thingie is what we need and like now. I mean
people have external cd drives and whatnot.
On another note I don't know why they ATI NVIDIA don't make a
barebones laptop with just an lcd screen and space for a CPU/gpu
socket or something. You know for the DIY's. Meh.
Which by the way I just got a BOTTOM of the line compaq for 500 for
christmas for my dad. Is really nice other than the battery life of
2.5 hrs. 1.4 celeron, Wifi, DVD/cdrw... The thing that totally
AMAZED me was that it ran n64, snes, epsxe(psx), mame, at full speed
with all the games ... Street fighter alpha, ffx!! madness.... So
to get about 3000 games or so you just need the crappiest of
crappiest laptops. And probably the high capacity battery.

15" is still a common size since people go for free monitor
with a desktop deals. Right now you can even get a laptop with a
19" monitor.
